“Foodie” Fridays in Austin
Are you ready for some football?
On no, the Horns have an away game this weekend!! No problem. You may not be able to sit in the bleachers, but, good food and a good seat in front of a big screen TV cheering on the Horns with other fans is just as good and maybe better (no lines, no traffic…). So, check out these sports bars that are favorites with the Horns fans and get ready for kick-off at 11a tomorrow morning.
HOOK ‘EM HORNS!®
1. THE TAVERN http://www.tavernaustin.com
The tavern, located in a 2 story green and white half-timbered faux-chalet has quite a history. The building was originally built in 1916, 4 years before prohibition started in the U.S. Originally a grocery store, Hugo Kuehne, an Austin resident modeled the Tavern after a German public house. Legend says that the second floor became a popular speakeasy and brothel (some say the floor may even be haunted to this day). Then, in 1933 after prohibition ended, The Tavern was created and few Austin gathering places hold as many memories for soldiers, students, legislators and presidents as this historic building. It’s since been given a facelift with an attention to detail that continues the tradition of this Austin landmark. There are plenty of TV’s on both the first and second floors for watching the games. And, if you’re not happy with the game or just want to take a break from it, the 2nd floor has video games, pinball machine and zl tables to keep you happy. The food is your typical sports bar food and very good: queso & chips (an Austin staple), amazing white chicken wings and nachos; burgers (their signature burger is the kolache-bun burger served with fresh hand cut fries) and sandwiches like the Tavern chicken sandwich and several entrees are available including chicken fried steak. Both domestic and imported beers are available along with wine & cocktails. As they say at The Tavern, you’re never too far from 12th and Lamar!
2. CROWN AND ANCHOR PUB http://crownandanchorpub.com/
The Crown and Anchor opened in 1987 and has become a favorite neighborhood place for the Hyde Park/University area of Austin. There are plenty of places to relax both inside and outside on their large covered and open patio areas. And, dogs are always welcome on the patio, in fact they offer dog bowls and free delicious doggie treats that are made in house. Inside the Crown and Anchor you’ll find 5 big screen TVs and plenty of beer specials with a good variety on tap, all focusing on local and craft beers while watching the game. Billiards, darts and a few arcade games are also available here for those wanting a break from the game. A number of awards have been given to the Crown over the years: Best Bar Music, Best Friendly Bar, Best beer selection, best neighborhood bar just to name a few. Again, you’ll find a nice selection of burgers (mushroom swiss is a must have), hot dogs, sandwiches and salads. The Crown and Anchor is not just popular with the UT crowd either, you’ll also find the over 50 crowd and depending on the day of the week businessmen in suits.
3. POSSE EAST http://posse-east.com/
We here in Texas, especially Austin, take our football very seriously. Saturdays the entire town it seems is a sea of orange. The Posse East knows that better than most. The owner, a cowboy, is very much a gentleman with lots of old fashioned Southern charm and is as helpful as can be. The Posse has a legacy of over 40 years for Longhorn games and is within walking distance of Darrel K. Royal Memorial Stadium making it the perfect happy hour and tailgate destination. It has also won numerous awards, including Best Salty Burger and Best Restaurant Patio/Beer Garden by The Austin Chronicle and named One Of The Best College Bars in the nation by The Daily Meal. Their patio is almost completely shielded from rain, cold weather and has heaters making it one of the more comfortable places to take your dog for an afternoon outing. The crowd is very diverse, more so than you might think being only a block away from campus. You’re as likely to see a cowboy here as you are a computer geek, the ‘older’ crowd along with the undergrads and graduate students you’d expect. On the menu, you’ll find sandwiches like The Posse Portabello: a grilled Portobello mushroom with swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion & mayo on whole wheat bread along with the usual burgers, tacos, chicken, soups and salads. It’s easy to see why the Posse East has become one of Austin’s favorite spots to watch sports, eat good food and meet friends.
