Halloween in Tysons Corner

kids in costumeHalloween in Tysons Corner is fast approaching, and it comes around only once a year so it never hurts to take a safety refresher course. Make sure the costume material is flame retardant, and you may want to launder the costume first to get rid of any allergens. Plan to add reflective tape to the front, back and sides of the costume, as well as to the shoes, hat and candy bag to make certain your child can be seen in the dark.

If you will be going with your child, add reflective tape to your own clothing and shoes as well. Coordinate with friends and neighbors to get a larger group together. Not only is it easier for drivers to see a larger group of children together--there is safety in numbers. Send the kids out with a flashlight, cell phone and a loud whistle. Be certain they know what to do in an emergency and who is in charge for the night, and be sure to go over all the usual safety tips again.

Opt for make-up over a mask if possible and if not, enlarge the eye holes in the mask. Make sure the costume is not too long, and check for loose hems. Do a dry run a few days before in full costume and make-up. Turn out the lights and have your child walk through the house as well as through the yard to make sure they are comfortable and can see well enough. Don't forget the candy inspection. You may want to buy a bag of your kid’s favorite candy to replace what you have to toss out.

If you are opening your doors to kids on Halloween, you need to be safe as well, and only let kids in that you know. Don't open your door to anyone who looks suspicious. If you are elderly and alone, don't open your door unless you have other people with you. Another option is to create a little Halloween display outside your door, and put candy in a container with a sign.

If you plan on being on the road in the Tysons Corner area, or anywhere over the next few days, drive much more slowly than normal allowing more brake time. Turn corners more slowly and carefully, and be especially watchful leaving your driveway. Be cautious around crosswalks and intersections, and always pay close attention to curbs. Keep in mind that kids are short and hard to see, and they may be in darkened areas.
