They Don’t Give a Hoot But They Are Raptors

Screech Owls are small and compact usually growing from 7-10”.  And they live solitary lives except when they are mating. Then they are monogamous and both parents take care of the young.

 Screech Owl

This one is known as a Gray Morph. Screech Owls are an American owl: twenty-one species have been named but new ones are always being discovered.

They do have raptor style claws and beaks that tear into insects, reptiles, and small birds. The owl usually takes it’s prey back to it’s nest to eat.

Even though they are tiny, they have 'tude.

They don’t give a hoot- their calls are piercing.....well, screeches.

Hi Toni,

A few years back we had a nest of them behind the home. I could hear them all the time at night. Kinda neat.

Have a good day and thanks for the picture.

Best, Clint McKie

Judging from the leather gloves in the photo and your description,  I hope I do not meet up with one of these owls!  Thanks for the education.

Beautiful bird, Toni.  Nice to see in zoo or other facility.  Sometimes we hear owls up the road from our house.  Have a good day in sunny Florida.  Today is supposed to be the last warm day for awhile--maybe a longggggggggggggg time.  So I will visit your site to feel the warmth of friendship.

Toni,

Love those guys.  We had a resident owl family in Los Angeles, and we loved hearing their hoots in the middle of the night, they got the rodents my cats did not.  In Napa, we had a white owl that sat on the posts of the gates always looking regal very early in the morning.  Most vineyards build raptor homes, because they keep the vineyards organically free of pests.  Don't have one here yet.  Have a wonderful weekend. A

The ones that hoot, Joni, are also raptors. Thanks.

Roy - glad you enjoyed it! Thanks.

Larry and Sheila - they sure do and can be an annoyance if you're too close to them.

Alexandra - I've never seen a white owl. I didn't know about the vineyards, thanks for the info. I'm sure some owls will be moving into your area soon- they know who likes them.

Thank you, Tony!

I've always been fascinated by owls.  I think it's because they turn their heads from side to side like they do, and their heads seem to have an actual face.  No wonder we perceive them as being a little wiser than the average bird!

Myrl - I love to watch them do the almost full turn. They blink those eyes at you and you know what they are thinking :)

Silvia - At Disney's Animal Kingdom. The trainers walk around outside the bird theater with different ones.
