PAY ATTENTION FOLKS.  William Johnson offers a very important lesson in effective photography.

"something in the foreground to give a big scenic view a better perspective."

No, you do not have to shoot a home for sale while sitting in a hollow tree trunk.kitchen

However. . . . .

Rather than avoiding views with that tree in the front yard, incorporate it in the scene.

Don't shoot around the Jungle Gym in the back yard, make it a part of the scene, perhaps in the foreground.

Just as grouping furniture is more effective than everything against the wall (the way our grandparents did), a shot of the fireplace is more effective with a grouped sitting arrangement in the foreground.

A shot of a kitchen with an island in the foreground is very effective and "enlarges" the kitchen.

William is a master at "conformation" in the true artistic sense.  I wonder if it's an acquired skill, photography training?  Or, was he born with the talent???

Heard of a "Room With a View"? Here is a Hollow Tree Trunk With a View

Hollow Tree Truck With a View

I found this old hollow tree truck while on a trail through an area near Emerald Bay on Lake Tahoe.

I noticed that others were standing near and using this fallen tree as a vantage point. When I crawled under it, I saw what others were taking photos of with the added frame of the tree truck itself.

The view is similar but made better in my estimation with the tree truck as the frame for the view. I guess then that this is what is often described as perspective which then yields to the completed composition. In view shots it is always my desire to have something in the foreground to give a big scenic view a better perspective.

Hi Lenn, Thank you so much for the re-blog and the amazing introduction here. Really, I am not a master, you know in real estate when one increases their exposure, others interpret as " that person must be good, they have signs everywhere". Well, in this case, I have many photos because I see beauty everywhere and I can't wait to capture it so others can see it. With a lot of practice and the enormous amount of opportunity, it just seems like I am getting better at capturing some of the amazing treasures in our lives. I am at this photography effort 3 and half years. With a few more  years of learning and experience I will get to the true amateur level. When I can teach this and have a greater traveled experience, it is possible that I could get to the level you mentioned joined by multitudes of others. But I thank you sincerely for the compliment that I hope one day I can attain.

William.

I merely compare your mastery of photography to that of other real estate practitioners.

Others can produce memorable photos too but only if they're willing to put in the investment, hard work and dedication.

THAT is what has set you apart.

Lenn- I am always amazed at some of the MLS photos I see and  wonder if the seller ever looks at these pics.  Why not use a professional photographer or as Dorie and Randy suggested, learn it as you would any other skill you'd need as a professional Realtor.

William's pictures always tell the story well. I personally feel that listing pictures should be taken by a professional photographer and certainly not with an iPad or iPhone.

Kathy.  I don't believe we need professional photographers to shoot images of a $200,000 home.  All an agent needs is a camera and a little time spent practicing.  I've known agents with zip photo skills that just don't SEE the difference.

Karen.  William's photos always make me smile.

Diane.  They're always spectacular.

Margaret.  He does get adventurous doesn't he??

William.  You should.  You've worked very hard perfecting your talent and skills.

Brenda.   Indeed and William understands perspective like an artist.

Jill.  Spare me the videos but a few examples helps.

Lou.  That is is.

Leolinda.  I don't believe that we have to incur the expense of pro photographers.  We need to put a bit of work into learning to take a decent photo.

George.  I dread these storms, but take them in stride.  I'm prepared except for the back-up battery on my sump pump, which is beeping.  As long as the power is on, I'm fine.

Tom.  Indeed.  I thought this photo was pure genious.

Lenn, I am a stickler for my photos. Although my camera has been retired from active duty with the addition of Rich Pomerantz to our team as he is a professional photographer. But I still get critical, only now I hide under my desk and email him when I want something re-shot.

It really isn't difficult to take the time to fix your photos. But first you have to look, really look at them. We have many free programs available to fix our mistakes, often with one click. And then using your head, reading about how best to get a shot of a room will help.

But sadly, many just don't care or don't think it makes a difference. Yet I heard it twice yesterday.

One couple is planning a move out of state, already looking at homes where they are moving to. Here is what they found. The majority of homes have lousy pictures, many have no interior shots, or minimal interior shots. Although the descriptions paint a rosy picture of the homes interior, the lack of photos or bad photos force them to click on to the next. Sellers are sitting home wondering why no one is looking.....

Second people say that if there are no good photos to grab their attention they leave instantly. They are very visual, one is an architect, the other a web designer. They were talking about websites as they are not looking for homes. But they love to see photos.... more than words.

We are responsible for either learning how to take good photos or hiring a professional to do it for us. Or in our case, add one to the team!

Andrea.  I believe that an agent is as serious about the photos for their listings as they are for other aspects of buyer and seller representation.

A Cavelier attitude towards photos is often an indication of what to expect from an agent in all matters.

This is a beautiful example of photography. In my opinion, the tree really makes the picture 'pop'.
