The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal:  A Great Bike Hike

When I first moved to Washington, my office was on the same floor of a funky office building as the Washington Area Bicycle Association.  And these guys were serious about cycling.

One weekend, they invited a colleague and I to go with them on a bike hike along the C & O Canal, which starts in Georgetown and ends in Cumberland, Maryland.  It's 184 miles total, and as someone who'd been living in Manhattan for ten years, I wasn't exactly in tip top shape for a really long ride.  Not to worry, they assured me.  We were going to go by van for the first 120 or so miles, then take the last "few".  When we got started I got a pit in my stomach when I looked at these guys wearing shorts instead of their regular business attire.  And their calf muscles were intimidating.

That day, I thought I might die.  But it was really fun once we got back to the van.  By the time I got home, I was ready to sleep for a week.

Last week, I took this shot from Chain Bridge looking over the canal and bike path just before sunset.  And it reminded me of that fall afternoon a bunch of years ago.

As a Boy Scout we traveled (more than once) the entirety of the 184 5/7 miles of the C&O Canal!  And we got a patch for it, with five sections, indicating that we did all of it, and in different ways - hiking, canoeing and biking.

Yes, we see bikers on the trail out having a great day and then we see the bikers out for their daily 50 mile trip. If I had a bike, it would be a few miles and home. I know many love those long trips but that is more than this kid can handle.

Be safe, Pat!

I bought a new bike a few weeks ago and have been enjoying rides along the American River Parkway in the Greater Sacramento region.  I think it would be neat to have the opportunity to take in this one you are speaking of.  I haven't done more than 12 miles in a day yet.  I suspect I won't wander much further than that:-)

Roy, taking the trip by canoe would be really interesting.

Beth, taking pictures would be my preference, too.

and Barbara Jo, small bites works the best for me!  Georgetown to Great Falls is my favorite way to do it.
