You might feel a little helpless listening to the news about the storm which is raging on the east coast and affecting millions of lives, most recently Athlantic City which is buried in water. It does not appear that Hurricane Sandy will be visitingOregonany time soon, but it is a good reminder to us about being as prepared as we can for whatever may come.

 disaster preparedness

A few items you may not have considered and which will not be listed on the standard emergency kits are here for you to consider. This Old House recently posted a piece on atypical but useful items after interviewing preparedness experts. For the sake of being true to our climate, we’ll just make brief mention of the solar powered fan in the event of sweltering heat.

Five preparedness items you would be delighted to have should things turn ugly:

1. Reinforced work gloves – think of the combination of dirty water and sharp objects that major disasters bring. Having strong, thick work gloves could be very useful for clearing debris without injury.

2. The ultimate tool—a crank radio/ LED flashlight which also charges your cell phone. Not everyone has one of these; better add it to your gift idea list while you’re at it. 90 seconds of cranking will create 15 minutes worth of power.

3. Baby wipes—practical in a situation where clean water is not yet available. Emergency experts point out that these can be used to wipe down all kinds of surfaces and caution against the ‘lotion’ version.

4. Vinyl tablecloths—what? For an instant dry surface to sit on, these cheapies could make even a ruinous landscape a little more clean and cheerful.

5. Fishing line—compact, strong and voluminous, it could be used to secure many objects and make life a little more pleasant in the midst of chaos and misery.
