Time to Harvest - Bananas from my Garden in Hernando Beach Florida

The banana trees have made a nice come back this summer after suffering a bit from the cold winter we had two years ago.  There was no fruit last year but this year, one of them put on a bunch of bananas that were ready to be picked!  Yes, it is November but living in Florida gives us a long growing season.

After the harvest, this particular banana tree will not produce again and slowly dry up.  During this process, the remaining trees around it will draw some nourishment and moisture that remains in the stalk from it so it is advisable not to cut the tree right away.

And what do you do with golden yellow bananas from your own garden?  Well, you eat them!  These bananas are shorter than the ones you buy in grocery stores but they are thicker as well.  This particular variety has a rich, creamy texture and they taste just like... bananas!  Once off the tree, they do ripen quickly so a few of them made it into banana pudding!

Love banana pudding too!  No banana growing in gardens in Kansas; just tomatos, corn, beans, squash, onions, potatos, etc.

Silvia,

What a wonderful idea to grow your own bananas.  I bet they are tastier than the store bought variety.  Banana pudding sounds really good.  A

Silvia, you are so lucky to go to your garden and get a banana!   Had one this morning, but ALWAYS from the store.   Nothing like getting your veggies from the garden!

Than, I never knew about Banana pudding until I moved to the US.

Lawrence, that sounds like you had a pretty good harvest this year!

Alexandra, Bananas make a nice tropical addition to a back yard.  Sometimes they produce, sometimes they don't, but when they do, it's an added bonus!

Debra, we have bananas, I'm sure you may have apples... something we can't grow too well in our climate.  :-)

Joan, I know, everything that you can grow yourself always taste a hundred times better.

Now that's a sight for sore eyes.  If those were at my house, I'd be getting out the frying pan, while putting in a quarter stick of butter, tossing in brown sugar, chopped walnuts and cinnamon.  Then, I'd slice those bananas up and stir fry them for a minute or two. . .If I had Vanilla ice cream around, I'd add a scoop before serving!

Silvia I grew up with banana trees around the house.  I told my husband eating a banana is not as pleasurable until you pick a ripe one straight from the tree.  After having such an experience he agreed.

Those fat short bananas are my favorite.

Happy banana growing.

Jennifer, so glad you could convert your husband to homegrown bananas. They really are fairly maintenance free, happy to be left alone and then they treat us with sweet fruit!

Patricia, thank you! I think there may be a lot of small scale "banana plantations" around here. Some of the neighbors have them as well!

Hi Silvia,

Great pictures and the pudding looks wonderful. Thanks for sharing such a great banana plant. I was just in the Gulf and they had so many groves of bananas growing. I do not think we have them here in California.

Kristin, I'm surprised because I would think they would grow in Southern California as well.
