Swansboro, North Carolina got its first library in the early 1950s when the Women's Club of Swansboro took matters in-hand and began the Swansboro library.
Seven years later the county library system agreed to take over the operation of the library provided the Town of Swansboro would furnish a location. An agreement was reached and the Swansboro Library became a branch of the Onslow County Public library system.
The first location of the new branch was the Old Swansboro Community Building where it remained for eleven years. In 1968 it was moved to the Swansboro City Hall and that was its home for 28 years.
In 1993 the library moved to its present location on West Corbett Avenue into a renovated funeral home.
As the population of the area grew and the library increased its resources and patrons, a need for more space was recognized. In December of 2001 renovations began and by March 2004, the expansion was complete. The Swansboro Library had grown from a space of 2500 square feet to 5300 square feet.
The library is very active and offers weekly programs for children, teens and adults.
