Operation Christmas Child 2012

Operation Christmas Child 2012 underway!

I’m so glad that my church- Aloma (Baptist) Church, Winter Park, FL- has once again partnered with Rev. Franklin Graham’s Samaritan’s Purse organization for another year.

Last year, our church had a lofty goal:  filling, collecting and sending 1,000 shoeboxes.  When all was said and done, our church had collected over 1,300 shoeboxes- and they were on their way to other parts of the world where they were surely going to make a difference in some children’s lives.  Some children (such as the one from Haiti in the photo above) might never have gotten a gift prior to the shoebox nor one since- but I’m told there were smiles all around when the shoeboxes arrived.

This year’s goal?  More shoeboxes, of course!  Our sanctuary was filled with over 1,000 empty shoeboxes this past Sunday morning- yet all were gone by the end of our 2nd service.  I don’t even know if we have a numerical goal this year or a certain number we want to fill (or new record we're wanting to set!)- but all are dedicated to giving as much as we can to ensure there’s a little bit of joy in the hearts of these children abroad- and that they come to know the Good News of Jesus Christ Last day for us to turn in our boxes is 11/18!

If you have the opportunity and/or the inclination, please take a moment to visit the Operation Christmas Child section of the Samaritan’s Purse website and to review somef the material found by clicking the other link that follows.

Thank you for your consideration in helping Operation Christmas Child in your community.

We've participated in this before! Particularly when my kids were smaller... they loved putting together the shoebox and picking things for it at the store. It's a great way to make a a big impact on a child's life without huge expense or trouble. Kudos to you for getting the word out.

Hi, Gretchen:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your kind words and sharing of your experiences.  Yep, that's what it's all about!  Something new that might make things even more interesting is how you can pay $7 and "Follow Your Box".  Again, this would be great for kids and help make things a bit more personal- as you can actually follow the box you pack and see which country was its ultimate destination.

Hi, Sussie:  Thank you for stopping by.  Personally, I think this is a good drive to take part in for a few reasons.  Aside from the ultimate goal of helping kids abroad and spreading word of God, it's something that's very practical to take part in.  it's a small box that doesn't require folks to spend a ton of money on things- hence it's cheaper than the Angel Trees and other drives we take part in that can be cost-prohibitive for many these days.  It's simple- meaning no learning curve or complications that might deter Seniors from participating in it as they've done with other drives.  Lastly, it's a fun activity that's fairly easy for parents to involve their kids in- with both the learning opportunities it presents and its "kids helping kids" aspect being added benefits.

Greetings, all:  As of last check, we had 933 shoeboxes turned in!  That number might increase- as I believe some of "our" shoeboxes were dropped off at other collection points and would get tallied later on.

But even if the 933 were to stand as our church's "final answer" count, it still means knwing that despite anything else that might happen during this Christmas season, 933 kids will have something to open for Christmas.

Great job, Aloma (Baptist) Church!  God is good every day.
