Anyone who has been selling real estate for a while has their share of zany experiences. Outrageous? Perhaps not, but definitely zany.

Take these for instance:

  • fearOn a property tour with buyers, appointment made to show the house; unlock the front door to be greeted with a big dog poop in the middle of the entry -- (buyers didn't buy)
  • A different day, a different buyer, on tour, appointments made; rang bell; no answer; key from keysafe -- then door opened and a late-middle-aged, overweight woman in a sheer negligee opens the door. Stunned agent, embarrassed buyers, nonplussed seller (buyers didn't buy)
  • House advertised as being open on Realtor® tour; rang bell; no answer; used keysafe to enter, calling out "hello." Turned down the hall --- to hear the shower going. I tiptoed out quietly and quickly
  • Then there was the house that was infested with spiders, cobwebs draping across doorways, and the one with a dead mouse in a corner of the kitchen.

Outrageous? Perhaps not, but a lesson for sellers and listing agents on what it takes to NOT sell the house!

Life is never dull or routine in the real estate business, and I often find myself in the morning humming the tune from The Sound of Music, "What will this day be like, I wonder....."

--- Just another benefit of living here!

That first story would surely turn off any buyer. What are the owners thinking....

I love your "What will this day be like, I wonder...."  That is why I love this career so much. It is never dull or boring. Your stories were a hoot. I suppose most of us have had unbelievable things happen to us while showing.

Hi Edward and Celia - that sure turned off my buyers, and I remember that every time I drive past the house, years later!

Betty, isn't that the truth? If we didn't thrive on the unexpected, we wouldn't last long in real estate. Every day is different. I'm glad my stories made you chuckle!

Lottie - Great examples of how to not sell a home and leave a lasting negative impression of the property.  To this day you still remember those properties and not in the best way!

I'm pretty sure your first story would turn off EVERY potential buyer.... Lottie.  I'm not surprised you remember that incident every time you drive by - it left a powerful impression!

Chris Ann -- never boring, is it? And no 2 days alike. I love it!

Jim -- LOL! I'm pictuing the box of chocolates with a little hole in the bottom of each where kids 'sampled' them!

Laura - some impressions are lasting, so why not make them good ones? Dog poop, naked sellers and mice aren't at the top of my favorable impressions!
