“Foodie” Fridays in Austin

Dories picks

Are you ready for more football?  But, are disappointed there’s no home game again this weekend? No worries – we’ve got it covered.  Here are 3 more sports bars where you will have that big screen TV, great brew and lots of good food to choose from while cheering the team on with other Horns fans.  So, grab your significant other and head out for a fun afternoon at any one of these.  Kick-off this weekend is 2:30pm at Texas Tech University.

        HOOK ‘EM HORNS® !!

1.      THE BACKSPIN SPORTS BAR            http://www.backspinsportsbar.com

At the Backspin, you’ll not only find Longhorn and sports fanatics; it’s a place where Austinites enjoy having a great time in a friendly environment.  Executive Chef Alex Zaldana prepares a wonderful selection of delicious appetizers and entrees that satisfy even the most discriminating tastes.  At The Backspin they use only the freshest ingredients and prepare all meals to order. The kitchen is open late and during football season, they open at 9am on Saturdays and 10am on Sundays for breakfast; and it’s the only sports bar in Austin that offers a champagne sports brunch on the weekends. You’ll find your typical sports bar food: buffalo wings, pizzas and what has been called “the best chipotle burger in town”.  But, you’ll also find more than that: patty melt sandwiches, authentic “Chicago” hot dogs and Greek Euros, baby back ribs, sliders and an assortment of salads and sandwiches.  To quench your thirst choose from some of the finest liquors in town as well a great selection of well drinks, 20 beers on tap and a large selection of Texas beers.  All in all, The Backspin is a wonderful dining experience with your choice of any sport, anywhere in the world being shown on 15 huge plasma TV’s for the ultimate sports bar experience!

2.      MyPLACE SPORTS BAR AND ITALIAN GRILL    http://www.myplace-austin.com/austin-sports-bar.html

MyPlace, located in the former Bellagio Italian Bistro space, is a new concept from owner Linda Bernardone and her team that has been serving fine Italian dining in NW Austin for the last 10 years.  Having been customers of traditional sports bars all over the customers, they listened to their regulars and created what they call an upscale “Sports lounge” environment offering a comfortable, friendly and casual atmosphere. There’s a larger bar area that seats over 20, a conversation area that features comfortable sofas, free WI-FI, 12 50”+ HDTVs for fans of every sport (NFL Ticket, MLB,NBA and NCAA and the Horns games!).  Owner Linda says her vision for the restaurant was to have an atmosphere that resembled Sunday afternoon at home: football games, cocktails and good food.  Some of the food you’ll find at MyPlace includes delicious pizza, Calamari, Spicy sausage and penne, chicken piccata and New England fish and chips.  You’ll also find weekly specials including cheesesteaks with provolone and pulled pork with cole slaw.  Happy hour is not to be missed where you’ll find classic cocktails & specialty martinis such as Lemon drop martinis, Cosmos, Orange creamsicles, Pometinis, Chocolate cake martinis  and more!  At MyPlace they want to treat you like an owner (so you can say it’s “myplace”) and look forward to making you a regular “where everybody knows your name”!

3.      COVER 2              http://cover-2.com/

Owners Matt Dodson and Doug Young have a shared passion for outstanding food, exceptional service and a pure love of sports.  They took that passion and created a casual, comfortable sports bar that you can call home with 26 TVs, 80” flat screens, a great sound system making Cover 2 a premier sports bar.  Menus are carefully prepared with the finest, freshest ingredients to satisfy everyone’s tastes.  Cover 2 offers a full bar with a premium well, a great selection of spirits, 25 draft beers, 2 chilled liquor taps and a wonderful selection of wines.  In addition to lunch and dinner, Cover 2 also offers a delicious Sunday brunch that includes eggs benedict and mimosas.  A sampling of their menu includes: wonderful enchiladas, buffalo wing sliders with bleu cheese, fantastic burgers and some pretty mean mac ‘n cheese.  Cover 2 is a trendy screen-filled restaurant great for watching the Horns this weekend; but it’s also an awesome place to just spend some time hanging out and relaxing.
