Tonight I made the drive into the office where there is power and internet. Jean and I are so thankful that all of our family is fine and that we suffered no major damage during the storm.
We only wish that the rest of the folks in our area could say the same thing. This morning the only images we saw of the devastation was in the newspapers (they were available in the powerless 7-11). As I drove thru town to get some things we'd need, in particular a propane space heater the damage was obvious. Trees were down, there were pieces of siding wrapped around telephone poles. An awning from a local business was in the parking lot of another business across the street. So many roads were blocked, mostly becuase power was out and the traffic lights aren't working.
So when the email came (on the cell phone) that the office had power and internet, I decided to go into the office to try and get some work done. Pictured here is some of the minor damage that I encountered on the ride in. I didn't photgraph any of the bad damage and honestly wouldn't want to post it for any reason. So regardless of the fact that I'm unable to print in color, I am able to enjoy Active Rain and get some other work done.
Sadly many in Union County are not as lucky. While the Jersey Shore (and other areas) took such brutal damage, Union County was one of the worst hit places in the state. Very few places have power and virtually NO gas stations are open. The only gas station I saw open was on the Garden State Parkway and the line was more than a mile long to get gas.
Most of the schools in the area are closed for the rest of the week and Halloween will be celebrated on Monday.
Tomorrow we'll visit our listings to check on our clients who we haven't been able to reach. But for now we're glad we're safe and looking for ways to help out those in need.
Jean and I were talking today about how much we miss Active Rain and all of our friends there. We're glad to be back on for now. Thanks for all the well wishes from our compatriots and we hope you fared as well or better than we did!
