Do you know where your WINForms® Desktop transactions are stored?

The default folder path is C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\RE FormsNet\Depot\Local\Master

This path is difficult to remember and unless you backup your entire local drive, you probably aren't backing up your WINForms® Desktop transactions.

Have you ever tried changing the default folder path? Like many processes, it is relatively easy, but it isn't straightforward. Here's how you can change the default path so that you can find and backup your transactions with ease.

  • Create the new folder where you wish to store your WINForms® Desktop transactions.
  • Create a folder inside your new transactions folder called Master.
  • Open WINForms® Desktop.
  • Close the Transactions Manager window so that you can access the WINForms® menus.
  • Select Options... from the Tools menu.

  • Select Local and click Browse.

  • Locate the new transactions folder you created and select it. Do not select the Master folder.
  • Click OK to select your new folder. A warning message will appear.

  • Click OK.
  • Close WINForms® Desktop.
  • Locate your old transactions folder so that you can move those transactions to your new folder.

NOTE:The default path is C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\RE FormsNet\Depot\Local\Master

  • Move your transactions from the old default folder to the Master folder you created inside your new transactions folder.
  • Open WINForms® Desktop and verify that your transactions have been found.
Were your transactions found? The key is pointing WINForms® Desktop to the new transactions folder, but placing the actual transactions inside the Master subfolder. WINForms® Desktop automatically creates a Master folder inside the default folder, so it expects to find that Master folder. If you pointed WINForms® Desktop to your new Master folder, it would have looked for transactions inside a Master subfolder inside your Master folder.

Confusing? Absolutely! Unfortunately, it's been confusing for several years. Fortunately you now know the secret to moving your transactions in WINForms® Desktop.

Thanks!

Frank, You think so? I'm still confused. Why can't WinForms be modified to create the folder where it can easily be found in the first place? I can't tell you how many times I've "lost" transactions on my own computer.

Bill, I'm disappointed that WINForms® Desktop hasn't undergone a serious revision in the past two years.  The convoluted path is probably the default location where applications can store data.  Where it gets confusing is when WINForms automatically creates the new Master folder inside whatever folder you select.  That trips up most people when they try to change the default to something easier to locate.
