Here's One Way to Make a Good Decision

By
Real Estate Agent

Halt v. - verb (used with object): to cause to stop temporarily

Margaret-Ann Ashburn is the Broker-in-Charge of the Forest Acres office of Russell & Jeffcoat Realtors in Columbia, South Carolina. She has given me several pieces of advice about life and being a great real estate agent. I'd like to share with you a great life skill on decision making that was given to me by Margaret-Ann.

When making decisions, you should always follow the H.A.L.T. Decision Making Process. Never make decisions when you are.....

H - HUNGRY

A - ANGRY

L - LONELY

or

T - TIRED

In my opinion, we should never make decisions when we are emotional about someone or something. I've mostly followed this philosophy before I met Margaret-Ann. She just gave me (and hopefully....you) a simplistic point of reference to help my decision making process.

Before you make that decision..................HALT!

Hi David,

I like your message, and the method!  I am one of three partners in my real estate company, and I am the one who "processes" everything...I think and re-think before I make a decision.  I tend to make the other two crazy, but I think in the end they appreciate my decision-making process.

Thanks again.

So true!  Take a deep breath, and deal with extreme issues when you are calm.  She has given you very good advice.  Thanks for the reminder.

It's a Good Life!

Great point David...you need to take a deep breath and set aside your emotion.

That is sound advice!  I try to never make a major decision when I am emotionally or physically on empty.

Yes, very good advice.  It is always wise to step back and or take a walk.  I like to wait at least 24 hours when my emotions are high before I make a decision.  Real Estate is truly an emotional endeavor for all parties, so HALT should become common practice for Realtors.

Too many bad decisions are made in the heat of the moment.  Those decisions do nothing to further things.  Too many rushed decisions get made when the decision represents the only thing between me and my food!
