31 Comments on Now That It's Fall My Closet Is Getting Cold Again
Jay, Mighty Mo at work again. Pre construction inspections are so important.
I did a pre-drywall inspect one day and saw all the insulation disarrayed, out of the walls and on the floor.....Went to tell the on-site supervisor to attend to it before the drywallers come and he was indifferent. The drywallers wont put it back in either so consequently once those walls are sealed...it is out of sight and out of mind and then many years later, a guy with a camera (Jay) shows up and well you know the rest......good post
Home Run Post Jay!
I have a home in escrow with exactly this issue suspected. Your posted couldnt have come at a better time.
Love that thermal imaging!
Paul
Have you ruled out paranormal activity? I'm just asking...
My mother lives in a manufactured home. Her heating and cooling bills are outrageous. I'm sure it's due to poor insulation. I don't know which is more expensive to insulate properly or pay the untility bills?
Jay -- tagging into Tammie's(#18) comment - we purchased a preowned Manufactured Home at one point, and when we removed the paneling to put in some sheetrock, found they had used unbacked insulation which had slid down in the walls, leaving top 12-18" of wall without insulation. Mighty Mo has been earning its keep lately. Have a fantastic weekend!
That is such a clever camera. I would love to have one of those myself to discover all the leaks of air in the house..
Great post.
I'm pretty sure I have the same issue. The bedrooms over the garages are colder than other areas of the house.
Aren't your closets supposed to be 'cool'. You want your clothes to be cool don't you?:)
Clint - if they had done a pre-drywall inspection this would have been found then!
Mike - Mighty Mo has gotten a work out this week. Another one tomorrow and a four-unit condo in DC on Monday. He's going to want a vacation. I hope not. No union, so I have power.
Richie - that is the kind of thing that can be fixed EASILY now or not so EASILY later. You might make that point. And find a thermographer. Tell the builder all thermographers are really cute. He'll love hearing that...
Gita - and have fun doing that with a thermal camera! I highly recommend one.
Thaks Paul. Glad to be of service! Hope you can use the post.
Joshua - that is HER closet! As soon as I heard a woman's voice and that she was cold I knew what I was up against. My wife wears gloves in July (always cold...).
Gary - you are obviously not familiar with all my posts! I have lots of ghost posts. I have run into ghosts so many times, which always seems to look like the same one, I named him Mosby. Here is one:

Tammie - insulation (and caulking) is the cheapest form of energy savings, and breaks even the most quickly. Your answer depends on how long she will be in the house.
Steven - see what I said to Mike above. I'm hoping he doesn't want a vacation. He is busy tomorrow and Monday too! That pesky Sandy is making me some dough.
Ginger - you can have one. A decent one is down to $7 or $8K now.
Christine - that is probably it! Rooms over garages are notoriously leaky.
Robert - that is one fun thing I do with my camera. I demonstrate that I am the coolest guy in the room, and when we compare temperatures I always am. No fooling. So you KNOW my clothing is the coolest too...
Good evening Jay. You are going to keep posting these infrared pics until I give in and buy one aren't you? lol I keep my finger on the buy trigger but just haven't found "that" deal yet. lol
That is my evil plan, Randy, to cause you to spend ALL your money! Boohahahaha! But at least you'll have a lot of fun with it! And Merry Christmas...
This is exactly the reason the IECC requires an air barrier behind the tub on exterior walls and focuses on air sealing.
They can require anything Rob. If no one is there to see it, the requirement is met, right? There's a tree in the forest there, somewhere...
While this is a new house and lack of insulation is inexcusable, older homes often have very little insulation in the garage ceiling. Certainly not a full stud cavity.
For sure Jim. Older homes typically did not have the garage under rooms. A lot of older homes here have cement ceilings over a built-in garage, with a screened porch overhead.
