Innovative Ideas From the Rapid City Library:

Black Hills Knowledge Network

Rapid City Public Library

Front Facade of Main Downtown BranchOur Rapid City Public Library continues to surprise and delight. Over a decades-long career in higher education I have enjoyed working with many top-tier libraries at major universities.  But this Rapid City Public Library is one of the most vibrant, multi-faceted, interesting community-wide organizations I have ever encountered.

RCPL is clearly far more than the sleepy old, traditional book-warehouse place.  There are so many community activities, from a seminar on honey-bee colony social communications, to a teen Halloween party, to a Poets' Coffee House.  Don't have time to go there?  No problem, they've got you covered with a great collection of multi-media downloadables (audio, videos).

In fact, I think of it more as a broad-mission community center that happens to have an enormous collection of information on shelves.

You don't get a place like this by accident.  It shows that our community has somehow assembled a truly exceptional team of outstanding library staff.  In fact, I have been priveleged to know some of the nation's top professional library leaders, and happy to say that the most important asset of a library is not its holdings, but its staff.  And we have the best library staff, to help you learn about moving to Rapid City, surrounding communities of Hermosa, Black Hawk, Rapid Valley, Piedmont, plus Rapid City Schools, and jobs in Rapid City.

Black Hills Knowledge Network

Knowledge NetworkOne of my own favorite recent discoveries is the Black Hills Knowledge Network, of which the Rapid City Public Library is a major contributor/organizer.  If you're thinking about moving to Rapid City and buying a home then you'll want to learn more about the area.  The Knowledge Network's online information about Black Hills area economy, work, health and wellness, government, surrounding communities (e.g., Hermosa, Black Hawk, Piedmont, Rapid Valley, Rapid City) is massive.  And growing all the time!

If you've never checked out Rapid City's library, or the Knowledge Network for the Black Hills, you may want to check them out.  I do...regularly.
