iPhoneI wasn't excited about the Apple iPhone until I was bugged by friends to check it out. The word-of-mount buzz on this device has been crazy. What's the big deal about the iPhone? The big deal for me is that I can now replace tons of devices. I'm tired of carrying a Treo, Blackberry, iPod, and camera with me. If you've ever used an iPod or other Apple products, you understand that the #1 reason to buy them is because they are easy to use. Apple products are well-integrated with software and hardware products made for mac.

COOL FEATURES:

  • Listen to your iPod using a Bluetooth Headset! Finally, we have wireless headphone access to our music that's inexpensive.
  • Widescreen that automatically senses the orientation that you're holding it in. The screen will flip vertically or horizontally.
  • Touch-screen. No need for a stylus or pen to touch the screen with!
  • Full internet access. You can read your regular email and use a regular internet browser. No more having to only browse special sites made for PDAs.
  • Uses the OSX operating system. No special OS for the device itself, which can mean full integration of applications later. I heard the internet will operate as fast as it does an Apple notebook.

Here are the top devices you can replace with your Apple iPhone:

  1. iPod or Portable MP3 Player. They have a 4GB and 8GB models.
  2. Cellphone. I have a TREO right now, so it will replace that.
  3. Blackberry. You can get full access to your email. No need to have a special account or software.
  4. Mobile Internet Device. Full internet access using standard browsers that are available for mac.
  5. Mapping Device. Mapping software is integrated. You won't get fancy GPS features out of the box, but you can get directions on the spot.
  6. Portable DVD player. Download movies from the iTunes store and play them right on the widescreen iPhone.
  7. PDA. iPhone is integreated with your calendar and contacts.
  8. Digital Camera. Now this is only 2 Megapixels, but no need to carry a separate camera in your car for quick pictures for clients.iphone2

Watch the keynote address by Steve Jobs. See the device now on YouTube.

I bet I am missing some of the features because I've only listened to a few interviews. I'm pretty sure it will only work on mac, but now that Apple Computers can runs windows operating system, it seems like it should work on both. iPhones are going to be available in June, so we have plenty of time to investigate.

Feel free to give your thoughts.

I heard about the iPhone, but this is the first time I have seen it.  Thank you for the links.  I wonder which service providers will have it?

Dee: It sure looks cool. Apple has really done some great work these past few years and they continue to soar. Is the service with Cingular only? I've been doing some research. Do they cost about $500?

I love most Apple products, including computers (I'm a Mac person) but I am not enthusiastic about the iPhone.  It seems a fantastic gadget and it does many different things, and I am sure it will probably work better than any of the other multifunction phones out there.  It will be a fantastic phone for whoever wants to have everything there in one piece of equipment. I for one, prefer to have the phone separate from everything else, just by itself. Why? I have a few reasons, but the main one is that I like very small phones because I have it in my hand for long periods of time during the day, and I want something that feels comfortable. I use a bluetooth ear piece when I'm driving, but for the most part I hold the phone in my hand. The problem is that in order to have all these functions and a large screen to make those functions "functional", phones such as the Blackberry, the Treo, and now the iPhone, have to be big. The iPhone measures 4.5 by 2.4 in and that is still too large for me. Maybe I need bigger hands? ;-)

Randy: So far, they said it's going to work on Cingular. I'm tired of Sprint, so am ready to switch! I liked their service for the Blackberry so far.

Griselda: i wonder how the iPhone stacks up to the TREO in terms of size. I read that the TREO was 4.4" x 2.4" x 0.9"

The iPhone dimensions are 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46 in , so it's much thinner than the Treo. But still too large for my taste. Considering Apple's creativity and cutting edge technology, now that they are in the phone business my hopes are up that in the near future they will come up with a small phone that has the capability to change into a larger screen device when you want to use the internet, its PDA capabilities or read/ write your email. I'm sure it will come, because the tendency of technology is, for the most part, to increase the capacity and functions of a device while decreasing its size. So I am waiting...it will come. In the meantime, Dee, if you get an iPhone tell us what you think of it.

Cingular has an exclusive 1-yr agreement with Apple to be the only carrier for this phone. As for size compared to treo, it seems the iPhone will be much thinner but overall weight & other dimensions will be similar, which is fine with me. I too prefer the smallest phones possible but it's so nice to have everything in one device. Only having to grab one or two things running out to an appointment, versus 4 or 5 is a lifesaver for me.

Hey Ryan it is good to know about Cingular havonig an exclusive agreement with Apple. By the time it is available more widely they should have finished tweaking it. I need one that will say, "Hey here I am! Don't leave me!" LOL Really though, I usually keep everything but the phone is a camera bag but I admit to being tempted about by the iphone. :-)

Fortunately we have at least a few months to think about it and hear comments from Beta testers before we have to make a decision on buying it. Also gives us a few more months in our current contracts. As far as I know, yes, it's just Cingular - but I didn't know it was only a one year exclusive.

Dee,

Great post! Carrying one tool for all the jobs we do is appealing, and I have been postponing replaxing my current phone, old pda, and my lockbox key. Is the iPhone compatible with electronic lock boxes anywhere? The separate key is what I am most in need of discarding.

Current phones available, such as the Samsung i730, Audiovox XV6700, etc. do everything the iPhone does and much more. This devices only has a soft keyboard (very slow to type on) and the only available software will be Widgets. It will not integrate with your Office applications, corporate email servers, etc or run any of the 1000's of PDA software available. It also has no stylus so the screen will be smudged from finger prints.

The iPhone will only be available on Cingular. Cingular does not have a true high speed data network like Sprint and Verizon's EVDO Rev-A networks. The iPhone is a consumer grade device. It is not meant to do the same things as professional grade products like many of the Windows Mobile 5 (and upcoming WM 6) Devices available. It is not a true PDA or PocketPC. It is simply meant for iPod users who want to integrate phone and limited data use into one device. If you need a true producitivy device and PC integration the Windows Moblie devices on an EVDO network are the way to go.

The bottom line is that the iPhone is fine for teenagers and other consumers but it is not a true business class device.

Eloise:I'm sure hoping the Supra key works because I'd hate to buy a different palm device.

Don: I'm going to just simply say that Apple rocks. :-) Everything is always so easy to use and I like Cingular's customer service. I used them when I had a Blackberry and it was pretty refreshing since I'm stuck with Sprint. If it was up to me, I'd have Sprint's license to sell wireless revoked. Their customer service and call quality can be compared to what you'd get at a seedy bar in Vegas...not that there's anything wrong with a seedy bar in Vegas...

Thank you for the post Dee.

I've been trying to decide whether to wait until June for the iPhone or go ahead with the Blackberry Pearl. I think I'm going to go ahead and wait.

All the Best,

The Google Maps feature on the iPhone is so great for a real estate agent. With the January 2008 software update, Google Maps will locate where you are with the press of a button. From there, search for whatever the buyer wants to find in the neighborhood: schools, gyms, whatever. You'll have the information quickly, and you'll have the telephone numbers so you can call and answer neighborhood questions on the spot.

So I've also been looking into the ATT Tilt. It has about everything you need. I wish the iPhone worked with Top Producer.

I have been looking at those phones for a while now.  I like playing with them but I do hate the finger smudges.

Dee-I am not on the AT&T cellular network, so I won't get an iphone. However, the ipod touch is intriguing. Apple just added functionality to the touch to give it pretty much all the functions of a pda. Also it has wifi access to the Internet. Now it appears to be a iphone without the phone. I am seriously considering it as a replacement to my Palm pda. The latest news is that apple is opening up to third party applications and there is a rumored price reduction. It is hard to resist. What is your opinion of the touch?

I heard the iPhones were going to get on the GSM network end of March...or Apple may wait until the holidays. Either way, I decided to hold off to see if they're getting updated. Kim Komando is the radio show I heard it on.

Dee-I have read the same information on a number of websites as well. There is also a rumor of a price reduction on both the iphone and the ipod touch in the next month or two (google ipod rumored price drop ipod touch), so it is smart to hold off on a purchase.
