Is It About The Community Or Is It About The Team?
Many of us grow up in areas which have major league football, baseball, and possibly some other sports franchises.
They are the home team and we live and die as they win and lose.
It becomes a passion that we can share with all of the citizens, our neighbors, of that region.
Most teams have their ups and their downs, but we consider the team to be a part of the community, so we support them through these good times and these bad times.
However, in our very mobile society, we sometimes are faced with the need to relocate, usually to keep good employment.
Moving may be a necessity to maintain our livelihood, but it can be a sad experience having to leave family, friends, and familiarities behind.
It may be so tough to leave some things behind, that some people choose not to leave them behind.
In the age of instant communication, it is possible to still follow the teams from our old towns just as if we were still there.
But something is still missing. We may still cheer for the team from the old town, but we no longer have the shared experience of rooting for the home team.
Maybe it is okay for people who have cheered for the same teams for many years to still keep them in their hearts.
However, is it reasonable to subject their children to their past? Should their children have to root for an out of town team, instead of for their home team? Should they miss out on the shared community experience of rooting for the home team? Should they be looked at by their friends as an outcast, who does not support the local team?
I know it's hard to leave something behind when it has been a major part of your life, but try to fully join your new community and embrace the local team.
