Is It About The Community Or Is It About The Team?

Many of us grow up in areas which have major league football, baseball, and possibly some other sports franchises.

They are the home team and we live and die as they win and lose.

It becomes a passion that we can share with all of the citizens, our neighbors, of that region.

Most teams have their ups and their downs, but we consider the team to be a part of the community, so we support them through these good times and these bad times.

However, in our very mobile society, we sometimes are faced with the need to relocate, usually to keep good employment.

Moving may be a necessity to maintain our livelihood, but it can be a sad experience having to leave family, friends, and familiarities behind.

It may be so tough to leave some things behind, that some people choose not to leave them behind.

In the age of instant communication, it is possible to still follow the teams from our old towns just as if we were still there.

But something is still missing.  We may still cheer for the team from the old town, but we no longer have the shared experience of rooting for the home team.

Maybe it is okay for people who have cheered for the same teams for many years to still keep them in their hearts.

However, is it reasonable to subject their children to their past?  Should their children have to root for an out of town team, instead of for their home team?  Should they miss out on the shared community experience of rooting for the home team?  Should they be looked at by their friends as an outcast, who does not support the local team?

I know it's hard to leave something behind when it has been a major part of your life, but try to fully join your new community and embrace the local team.

You Moved; Leave Your Football Team Behind.

You are very fortunate.  WE don't have any major teams around us...The Panthers are in  Charlotte and that is a 5 hour trip.

Thanks f or sharing..

This message seems to hit me. I'm an Oklahoma Sooner, that's where I met my husband and I'm an extremely loyal person. I cannot imagine my children going to any state Texas school (huge football rivalry here). But I guess you have to belong before you would understand the need to be a part of.

It's out-of-state tuition fees for when they attend college. And as I told my husband, we can afford it, we have planned and saved for it. After all, what's money for? To spend and we cant take it all with us when we leave.

Ginger,

I was in Charlotte for about a week at the time that they had been awarded a football franchise by the NFL.  I was a bit surprised that what to me seemed to be a relatively small town, at least, compared to other football cities, was selected by the NFL.  I suppose that the NFL figured that the fan base for the Panthers would come from all of the Carolina region, which is quite populous when considered as a whole.

Loreena,

I think that maintaining loyalty to one's alma mater is different than maintaining loyalty to one's old town.  Most people will remain loyal to their school.  I gave my daughter every opportunity to attend my alma mater, however, the choice was hers and my school became a very remote possibility for her, one which she decided against.

Ron,

If they really must continue to cheer for their old town's team, then could they, Pittsburgh, please, leave their snot rags behind?

Karen,

You go to your sports bar and I'll go to my sports bar and we can enjoy the game together via twitter.

Kathryn,

For Pittsburgh being such a delightful town, it, surprisingly, has some very obnoxious football fans.
