Kelowna Home Staging * Art In Modern Interiors * LIVING SPACES

Art is subjective. It is can be difficult to choose it objectively. Art tends to have a strong emotional impact. It appeals to the creative right brain.  That's a great thing when selecting it for personal use and enjoyment.

The left brain relates to art by trying to quantify and qualify, it seeks to make a logical decision about it. We need to balance left and right brain processes when selecting art for staging. It isn't the usual way we buy art, so can feel somewhat alien making a 'logical' decision where an emotive one is the usual criteria. (Sorry! but it's why A-types tend to need creatives to help them - a good thing! )

The use and selection of art in Property Presentation can feel even more challenging when trying to fit it to the wider base of prospective buyers. So what qualifies art for Staging Property?

  • Who are the buyers? Art in a family home will differ from that in a seniors community. Likewise, young urban professionals will have a different slant than their established counterparts in the 'burbs.
  • What is the decor? While mixing is always better than 'matching', the style should always be taken into account. Avante Garde modern art will rarely fit tradional decor well - and vice versa.

What is the Buyers Taste? Ah. Now here's the rub.

After establishing the first two points, the next considerations involve some fine tuning to appeal to as wide as audience as possible, staying within the market segment.

  • Color and image appeal to emotion
  • Clear Clean Abstracts, color presentation
  • Classic Un-fussy Impressionism & Expressionist Fine Art
  • Common images rather than theme interests
  • Fine art generally works better than photographic prints
  • Stand-out rich or subdued colors can work well to create focus and appeal to many, but not color so bright it dominates the room and decor - you know those ones that almost appear fluorescent!
  • Less detail and clear presentation is usually better than fussy detailed images.
  • Modern Botanicals work very well in many decors

Deborah ~ I always love the art you feature in your posts!  You are obviously very good at picking it out for your clients.  I like your tip about fitting the art with the decor.

Wonderful insightful post on choosing art for your home, Deborah. This is a tricky thing. As an Interior Designer I have helped many people select art and seen some doozies hanging on walls!  The topper had to be a 3' x 5' poster size photo of an owner's nude body - full frontal in the master bedroom.  What can you say? I was speechless.

Deborah ~ what a very left-brain with right-brain flare way of explaining the depth of the impact of art within the staging forum.  I have had those thoughts but am thankful for people like yourself who are together enough to put it in a format that is easily understood. Much appreciation here for your generousity!! ; )

Love the art featured in your post!

Deborah, You are good girl, I feel like I've just had a class in art appreciation! I love the colors in the beautiful pieces you featured and the fact that you co-ordinated the text color, you're brilliant.

Deborah, The art you show is always beautiful and many of the artists I don't know.  Then again you often show Van Gogh whose pictures I can stare at for hours (and hours).  Thank you for always sharing, art to me is like a breath of fresh air.

Deborah, thinking about art is so far beyond my capabilities.  And unfortunately I usually purchase "art" that appeals to me, rather than making an informed decision as to what type etc. I should be choosing.  But fortunately, erring on the side of caution, I always choose botanicals.  Thanks for making me think!

Kathy - I always appreciate your comments - these modern botanicals do work quite well huh? I've been around art so long I can do it with eyes closed practically

Thanks <3 !

Haha Bonnie - I'd say that's quite a doozer alright for a piece of art - how about a black velvet with the Beatles painted on it - hey that gives me an idea for a post!

I've seen some real winners too!

thanks Bon <3

Carole - I agree - art is very inspiring! I love Van gogh's work also - so brilliant, master of fine art and yet he had so little confidence, the poor man. I wonder if part of the intrigue of his is the favt that he put so much effort and energy into it, trying so hard to be enough?

Hey Terry! Modern Botanicals are very often a great choice for a wide variety of home, office and business  interiors - you are probably doing very well instinctively! When we become skilled at selection, it becomes second nature.
