Is Time Real or a Figment of our Imaginations?

By

Is Time Real or a Figment of our Imaginations? The master of the clock relents,
The ledger of all time balanced,
An hour borrowed, the debt repaid
And now a twenty-five hour day!
        (R Weisser 2012)

Our lives are controlled by time. Appointments, deadlines, bills that are due all add stress to our animal existence.

We have amazing technology that helps us keep track of time. And we have become dependent on knowing what time it is at every moment of the day.

And yet this critical overlay of celestial authority can be altered by an arbitrary mandate from a worldly source.

So my question is this:

Is time real, or just a contract that we have all agreed to respect? If time can be changed so easily, is it just a figment of our imaginations and not an immutable natural element?

For me, I’ll take the extra hour of sleep.

Apparently I needed it!

Morning Richard... I had planned on sleeping late today...... Darn it!  Instead of waking up at 5:30 ... I looked at the clock at 4:30. Grrrrr.... The dog got restless too so there went my extra hour of sleep.  Maybe a nap will be appropriate for today.

Richard, interesting idea you have here. Sprint, in their infinite wisdom, decided to push me ahead 2 hours this morning. I was very confused as to what time it was.

John...

What's time to a dog? Lol and I hope that you get your nap today!

Alan...

I want to fly like an eagle too! Thanks for jumping in!

Andrea...

Oh wow, big technology failure there. I hope that your area is recovering well. It's been one heckuva week!

Good morning Richard. Time is, time does, time moves. No keeping it a bottle. Glad you enjoyed your extra sleep.

Hi Richard - I can look out my window and see in the distance the 8 towers that are the atomic clock, broadcasting the exactly correct time, according to the National Bureau of Standards. And in the foreground, I can see about 600 ducks in the lake, waiting for some mysterious signal that will tell them it's time to continue their journey to warmer climes. And even closer, my dogs, for whom it is always either time to eat or time to play or time to take a nap. I have no idea who has it right.

OK, are we in "theoretical physics" class?  I haven't had enough coffee for that yet?  :

Time is an unrelenting master and also our slave.  It is what we do with it and thus what it does to us.

Good morning Richard. Watching deer and other animals one would think a clock is no measure of time. Hmmmm. Good post for a Sunday morning mind.

As I headed to bed last night at 11, my husband said but it's really only 10. I said, I know I plan on taking full advantage of the extra hour granted me and I did. I slept until 8 this morning. I needed that.

I have often wondered Richard if time was not kept what would the world look or be like. Would we age gracefully or one day be old.

We are so regimented by time.... I rebel by not having clocks in my house... the only one is on my stove. And, the only time I wear a watch is when I want to feel "dressed up"... LOL LOL

Perhaps it's both? I just know the older I get the faster it seems to go by. What's with that? I thought we were supposed to slow down, not speed up... :O) I took that extra hour and bask in the glory of it still being early and I "have time" to enjoy my coffee for a bit before I set out into the day...
