A Million Bucks in a Gunny Sack!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Grants Pass, OR 199909023

Melinda Peterson - RealtorA Million Bucks in a Gunny Sack!  I'm always amazed when I meet an agent for the first time and they don't look anything like their picture.  Then I wonder if they have the same thought upon meeting me ;)

Imagine our client's reaction, after perusing the web and seeing countless youthful photos of us, they too, are totally surprised at the first meet and greet!  I had one client tell me... 'If a Realtor can lie about their pic, they'll lie about anything.'  That was a wow!

I recently updated my business pic after a 5-year hiatus.  Lucky for me, I have a wonderful photographer who could make me look like a million bucks in a gunny sack.  I usually opt for an outdoor picture as it incorporates my love for Oregon's rural landscape (what's not to love about the Pacific Northwest?).  I can't tell you how many times I've scored a client based on my old pic (left).  When asked why they chose me as their Realtor, they say the jean jacket with the red tree background cinched the deal ;)

Granted, in an industry dominated by fifty something year olds, the prospect of updating our business photo is probably not a pretty picture.  But, if you're still sporting your high school pic, you need to do something about it... Now!  Come on my friends, we're in an age of digital everything... it's never been easier!

All you need is a great photographer (this is a biggy), a few change of clothes, add some props (your fav pet, flag, pumpkins, whatever) and walla!  There's nothing more exciting than discovering a million bucks in a gunny sack!  Who knew there could be a New You just waiting to jump out of the sack!

It's amazing what a new pic can do... even with a different doo... Cindy!

Thanks Lou... I'm doing my best to work on that!

It's not a bad idea... Kathy!  I plan on including my new pic on my 2013 calendars, which will go out to all my clients before Christmas ;)

You... Look... Marvelous!... Photos of agents is one of my pet peeves. I'm out and about all the time with agents and know most of them in the area by name. I do my homework by jumping online so I know more about them and can hopefully greet them by name. Many is the time I don't recognize a good percentage of them...

Totally correct though, a good photographer can make all the difference. Yet in your case, David had a great subject to work with, so I'm not so sure his job was all that tough... :O)

Nice photo! It doesn't look like you've aged a bit since the last one.

Mel,

Great points and great pics! That's exactly why I update my business head shots yearly and have my staff and agents do the same. It's important to represent yourself truthfully in every way possible.

Thank you kindly my dear Rene!  I'm sure you've seen it all in your travels ;)))

Ha!  I appreciate that Cynthia... but my happy lines greet me every morning when I look in the mirror ;)

Good for you Jim... I couldn't agree more.  You have a nice pic too!

Mel, both pics look great, but some people look better with age. You're one of them. Not sure why, but it looks like your eye color changed, too!

Funny girl... perhaps the sparkle in my eyes and the kick in my step are coming from the fact that I won't be MLS President very much longer ;)  LOL... Alexandra!

Awww, thanks Eric!  Funny you should notice my eye color... I noticed the difference too!  Must've been the lighting... most of the time they're brown with a hint of hazel ;)

I'm digging the 'young lady' part right about now... Kevin ;)

Mel, you look just as terrific in your new picture as you did in the old one! Still very beautiful! It's time for me to get a new picture also. The one I use here is two years old, and should be updated. I'm going to have to find that photographer who can work some magic!

Mel, you look beautiful in both pictures, but younger in the new one.  Now that is not going to be easy for the rest of us.  I have a dilema, when clients meet me for the first time they ask "where is the hat" and when I am wearing the hat (which I don't do often), they make comments that they like the hat.  If they only knew, I only wear the hat on bad hair days.  I guess when they are looking to buy in FL the hat seems to enforce the sunny state.  Will have to try some new photos on AR first and see how it goes.  As usual an enjoyable read, thank you.

Mel, if a flip of the coin determined whether business comes from clients seeing picture #1 or #2, the odds would be:  Heads I win, tails you lose.  Brian

Mel,

For some, it takes courage to update that photo. But to wait until you're unrecognizable makes it even worse.

I myself need courage.

I can picture your golden locks looking quite lovely against a red background... Rose!

Peter ~ Your comment made me think of a great song by Sting... A Thousand Years!  There's something very spiritual about that man and his lyrics!

The hat is definitely a signature piece and it looks absolutely stunning on you... Ellie!  I can think of a few ad campaigns that would go well with your signature too.  Hats off to ya honey!

Brian ~ Coins & Pics aside... You are wise... You are witty... and You are always a winner in my book ;)

My dear... Patricia, you have more courage than anyone I know in the Rain!

Your pic is stunning Debb... as are you my friend!  I think you could look like a million bucks in a gunny sack all day, any day!  BUT... if you're ever in my neck of the woods... and you're looking for a fabulous photographer (who's also a wonderful human being)... contact David Gibb in Jacksonville, Oregon.

LOL... Richard!  I can always count on you to lift my spirits and generate a smile ;)

Mel, this is a pet peeve of mine. I recently met an agent who said, "You look just like your photo". She did not. As a matter of fact, she didn't look anything like her photo because it looked to be shot 20 years ago. I'm with your client. If they aren't truthful about their appearance, what else are they concealing?
