Too Much Facebook Is Bad Business

Like anything "good" in life, too much of a GOOD thing can be bad! This is cannot be more true with social media; AND, I'm not alone in saying so, even Facebook agrees!

In a moment of clarity, Facebook itself posted the above picture and caption. Either this is a the biggest blunder in Socail Media history or the most insightful thing Facebook has said since its explosive growth; I think the later.

This is more than just Facebook, it's social media as a whole! And, sorry to say it, ActiveRain included.

We all understand the power and leverage digital marketing and social media can provide. But there is a fine line between effective use of time and a waste of your marketing time. But how do you know if you've crossed that line?

I've been there and crossed it. I've thought to myself, "I'll get all my business by marketing and engaging on Facebook and ActiveRain. Following up with my prospects or farming is just a waste of time." Now doesn't that sound like a bad business move? Sometimes our logical minds become very illogical and we justify bad choices. Luckily, I have an awesome business partner and mentor to check me.

The moral is, there are more marketing strategies than relying only on social media. Proper marketing includes a complete balanced mix of on and offline marketing tactics. That includes, traditional farming (door knocking, direct mail, distributing real estate flyers, and participating in community activities) and contemporary marketing (email marketing, blogging, social media updates, and web ads).

Having a well-rounded mix of marketing activities just makes more business sense, right?

Reubin, good blog.  I agree that Realtors need to balance social media  with tradional real estate marketing.  I have never been a fan of Facebook for business.  However, I am considering G+ for a new social media concentration.

I agree that we should not be dependent on social media.  I am glad that your business partner and mentor kept you from going too far astray.

This is so very true...I think sometimes we get caught up in the fun of social media and delude ourselves into thinking we are actually working, when we are not.
