Crofton, Maryland, will feel the impact of the 2012 election, far beyond the choice of President. In particular, Question 5 confirms the division of Crofton into four different Congressional Districts. It reads as follows:
"Establishes the boundaries for the State’s eight United States Congressional Districts based on recent census figures, as required by the United States Constitution."
Since the wording of this Referendum Petition seems to make so much sense, it’s likely the new boundary lines will pass statewide. Even if no one else votes against this measure, however, I do think that Crofton residents should send our State Legislature a message that we noticed their deliberate choice to neutralize the political impact of our community by dividing us into four districts, and we don’t like being marginalized. In this scenario, Crofton is a teeny sliver of four different congressional districts, of little (if any) importance to any of our Congressional representatives.
By the way, it’s entirely possible that you are in a different Congressional District than you were 2 years ago, so be sure to check out the candidates in advance. Some Crofton residents also have different polling locations than they did in past years.
Please take the time to review this sample ballot prior to voting tomorrow, because there are many other questions that impact us as Marylanders and others that are specific to Anne Arundel County. Voting lines will move very slowly in Crofton if residents wait until we’re in the voting booth to read them and make a decision.
Polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
