Question regarding inspection association? & how they reflect what sort of customers you get?

I am currently a member with InterNACHI (formerly NACHI) which has been a great expierence.

In California they have just come out with CAL NACHI (california NACHI) which is very similar and also included an extra cost of membership.

There are so many out there? such as: ASHI, CREIA, so many more I dont want to list.

So my ? to the realtors on, is what does the association mean when picking an inspector?

Or does the inspector even need to be a part of an association?

I hear alot about CREIA & some realtors for some reason will only use members of CREIA.

I want to know that the inspector that I'm using is accredited.

That is understandable, my ? is, have you ever verified the inspectors status before using them?

I have not been asked about anything other then what association I belong to.

I am an inspector, so speaking from this point of view, I know that Realtors here in Texas will want to know if my license is current, but I have never been asked about my affiliations.

I am very rarely asked what associations I belong to.  If I am asked, it is usually by older more established "old-school" agents----the ones that originally recognized ASHI as the only way to find an inspector that at least had some training.  Now there are so many associations and all train to the same level of "minimum standards" so finding an inspector of a "particular" association is not as important.  I find the better agents I work with are only interested in getting a good thorough report and want an inspector that isn't going to "freak-out" the buyer and put things in proper perspective.  I have had more agents check to see if my Structural Pest License is up to date.  I also think that because my affiliations are plastered all over all my marketing/website there may be no need to ask me anything:)  ASHI  & NACHI

I have never been asked if I am affiliated with an association. The only thing I get asked is "are you licensed"?

I would also echo Charles in that my affilations are plastered all over my brochures, cards, and website, so that is probably why I have never been asked.

I want to know that the inspector that I'm using is accredited.

Accredited with what?

Being a full member of 2 out of 3 of the major associations means that the inspector must have at the very least passed the NHIE or its rough equivalent. Being a member of the third association means the inspector could afford to write a check for nearly 300 dollars.

Being a member of an association is not a credential. Accreditation is often sought but hard to find in this business.

Chad,

I am a fully accredited member of the Society of Home Inspectors Trying to Help Every Agent's Desire to Sell (S.H.I.T.H.E.A.D.S.) and I'm not sure what you're getting at :)

Hi Brad,

It's likely more valuable than any other acronym.  Fortunately, I'm positive that you're not a member.
