If you live in Mount Sinai, you are familiar with the route of County Road 83 (Patchogue-Mount Sinai Road) to the Long Island Expressway. Those of you who travel this route each day will be happy to know that the Suffolk County Department of Public Works has started a project that will include widening the bridge when you exit the expressway to go north. Because there is only so much traffic light time, this causes a back-up on the service road, and causes safety issues as drivers try to make the light.
County Road 83 is a major road that runs from the South Shore to the North Shore, ending in Mount Sinai. The farmland that used to be here has been developed into residential housing and this has increased the volume of traffic on this road.
Due to the tremendous volume of people coming off the expressway and onto County Road 83, Suffolk County will be increasing the double left turning lane to a triple left turning lane - believed to be the first triple left on Long Island. By widening the bridge to carry additional capacity, it will remove the "choke point" that hinders traffic flow in this area.
It is anticipated that the project will be completed by summer - just in time for Hampton traffic!
