David du Bose Gaillard (1859–1913), the army engineer who was responsible for the construction of the Panama Canal.
He was born in Manning, South Carolina and graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in the year 1884. He was placed in charge of the construction of the Canal in the year 1907. Unfortunately he died of a brain tumor in 1913 just months before the canal's completion. There was a part of the Canal named after him called Gaillard Cut.
