My recent blogabout Atlanta's fantastic common ground green-space called Piedmont Park Spring In Piedmont Park got me to thinking about some of the other wonderful things to see and do here in Atlanta. In a subsequent blog I wrote about the historic Ansley Inn Me, in front of the Historic Ansley Inn, getting ready to head to the MARTA for a Braves game! a wonderful Bed and Breakfast in Midtown Atlanta.

In this blog I would like to highlight another wonderful outdoor space called Stone Mountain Park Atlanta's Stone Mountain Park

This wonderful outdoor space draws nearly 4 million visitors annually. Its close proximity to Atlanta makes it part of the metro area and a popular place to spend a sunny day! Stone Mountain Park is easy to find. It is located just 16 miles east of downtown Atlanta on US Highway 78. Just take exit 39 B off Interstate 285 and follow Highway 78 east for 8 miles. The main entrance for Stone Mountain Park is exit 8 off of Highway 78.

It truly does have something for everyone! The park encompasses a whopping 3,200 acres! There are over 15 miles of nature trails that are open to walkers, joggers, and hikers. For the very adventurous, their is a hiking trail to the top of Stone Mountain, but be warned it is a vigorous 1.3 miles to the top! For those who want an easier way to the top, try out the Summit Skyride, a high-speed Swiss cable car Summit Skyride that can whisk you to the top of the mountain in 3 minutes for a nominal fee! A trip to the summit is a must as the views are second to none. From the summit you can see the city of Atlanta to the west and the Appalachian Mountains nearly sixty miles to the north! As you can see from this photo there is an enormous memorial carving that towers 400 feet above the ground, is 90 feet tall by 190 feet wide and is recessed into the mountain 42 feet. The carving depicts Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson who were seminal leaders of the Confederacy. For obvious reasons, this carving is sometimes controversial.

Another popular thing to do at the park is to climb aboard the Scenic Railroad that features a full size 1940's locomotive and open air cars. For a small fee this relaxing train ride, complete with sing-a-long songs, will take you on a 5 mile journey around Stone Mountain. There are a couple of stops along the way if you need to stretch your legs! In 2002, Stone Mountain introduced its newest attraction a side-wheeler boat called the Scarlet O'Hara The Scarlet O'Hara Visitors can enjoy a relaxing 20 minute cruise around Stone Mountain Lake in this incredible boat!

Of course the Summit Skyride, the train ride, and the side-wheel boat ride all cost money but there is plenty to do here that is free! The Carillon (a set of stationary bells hung in a tower and sounded by manual or pedal action) was donated to Stone Mountain Park in 1964 by Coca-Cola after its exhibition at the New York World's Fair. There are several concerts daily, not all are live, given by Mabel Sharp Mabel Sharp The instrument and the eloquence with which Mabel plays it, is astounding and a must see/hear.

There is also an extensive songbird habitat located where the 1996 Olympics archery and cycling venues were. This habitat plays hosts to many native Georgia birds including the white-breasted nuthatch Before you head to the Stone Mountain Campground or one of the two Marriott Resorts, Evergreen Marriott Conference Resort and Marriott Stone Mountain Inn or back to the historic Ansley Inn, there is a final must see at Stone Mountain Park. The daily laser light show! This spectacular event is free with your $8 per car park admission. So after you have hiked the mountain, swam in the beautiful lake, or played a round of golf on one of the two championship courses, Lakemont and Stonemont, take your blanket or lawnchair to Memorial Lawn and get ready. This is a world class laser light show that is choreographed to popular music. The show lasts about 45 minutes and is the perfect end to a wonderful day at this park! Laser Light Show

Very nicely done Rich.  I grew up under the mountain in Clarkston so this really took me back.

Marge - You live in on of my favorite places, St Pete Beach! You aren't that far, you should visit Stone Mountain Park and Atlanta again some long weekend! I could point you to some great restaurants, but you probably have a few favorites of your own.

Danny - Glad you enjoyed it!

Michael - It is a wonderful place but then again, growing up in South Georgia, you have some wonderful places too. I especially like Cumberland Island National Seashore Cumberland Island National Seashore!

Debbie - Boat was inaugurated in 2002! There are new things popping up in the city all the time so you would be able to revisit Stone Mountain Park and find a couple of new things to see/do as well!

Brande - Nothing like swimming in the lake on a hotlanta afternoon, then having a great picnic, and then watching the laser light show. It is really a full day that honestly only has to cost the $8 per car admission.

That is great, I will look for the contract in the morning.

Rich-

Stone Mountain looks so lovely - I hope I'll get to visit soon! Great pictures, too. I especially love the wooded road in your comment - it reminds me of growing up in FL. :-)

Emily - Stone Mountain Park is a magnificent place for both visitors and locals. It is so close to the city, a suburb really, that many locals will go there for the afternoon. As for the pic in my comment, it is of Cumberland Island National Seashore which is just off the Georgia coast in the Atlantic Ocean. It is barely a stone's throw of north Florida! I'm glad you liked my post and thanks for commenting!

Might have to see if I can get Daughter talked into a Mother/Daughter vacation that is not Disneyland... maybe not this year, but someday.  Sounds great.

Chris - Atlanta is a wonderful city. As I know you enjoy music and musical theater, I am going to have to post a blog about some of the wnderful local theaters we have in ATL. In fact, I went to see the Vienna Boys Choir with my sister, Prince with a friend of mine, and Stomp with another friend of mine at the Fox Theater (this is the coolest theater, reminds me of something out of Lawrence of Arabia). In addition to the Fox, there are tons of other music and theater venues in the city but that is another blog.

Cris - There is so much to do at Stone Mountain Park that it really offers something for everyone.

Georgiana - It really is incredible that a park of this size is just minutes outside of downtown ATL. We also have Peidmont Park that I did another post on. It is a wonderful park in the middle of the city!

Christina - Thanks! Glad you liked it!

Atlanta does indeed offer something for almost everyone.  Don't forget the car museum in Stone Mountain Park.  Also, the 5 mile hike around the base of the mountain is a great way to train for things like the 3 day walk to fight breast cancer.

Lane - You are right on, Atlanta does seem to offer something for everyone! There is so much to do at Stone Mountain Park that I hope people will follow the link I provided in the blog to check it all out and do whatever the park (and the city for that matter) has that suits their interests. It truly is a beautiful park with lots to see and do! Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Input from other locals about what they like to do in and around Atlanta helps to paint a broader picture for visitors and future residents!

Donna - I am glad I could bring back some good memories for you! I have memories from both childhood and adulthood centered around Stone Mountain! There is nothing quite like their laser light/fireworks show! I remember Ray Charles singing Georgia On My Mind as the multi-colored fireworks exploded in the night sky! Great memories!

Tom - Thanks for reading and commenting! I spent many summers in Atlanta; enjoying Braves games at the old Fulton County Stadium, spending a lazy day at Stone Mountain Park or Lake Lanier, and be thrilled by the roller coasters at Six Flags! BTW, your link is great and I don't mind it as long as it opens in a new window. Could you please edit your link to do this. I am deleting your comment. Repost if you like with your link opening in a separate window..
