Rental scam on craigslist

Katherine: Some agents in our market rave about Craigslist. But if you search it here on Activerain, you'll find a lot of bad press. Personally I avoid it.

My husband and I just had someone attempt this scam on us. We're moving from Seattle to Anchorage, and found a great place on craigslist. The wife claims her husband is in Africa on a mission, and refused to meet with my mother in Anchorage to discuss a lease. My mother and I did research and found out that the house, which was completed being built in August, is actually still for sale. I am glad I went with my gut on this one.

Alicia- So glad you didn't fall for this one. What a move that would have been. It's crazy what people do. I'm wondering how they are accomplishing this all over without being caught.

We were looking for a space in Hawaii. Saw an add that was too good to be true. The listing had an address that I checked, and it was for an $800,000 condo. They were asking $1,150 per month. Right!

They asked for first month rent and a deposit.

We couldn't see the property first.

THE ONLY WAY TO PROTECT YOURSELF IS TO PAY WITH CREDIT CARD THROUGH PAYPAL.

Bottom line- stay away! don't lose your money.

I would not respond or give any personal information. This is a rental scam. Remember if it sounds too good to be true it usually is.

This particular scam has been happening for quite some time... the names have been changed but still the same. If you have been in contact you may want to phone your local authorities as well.

OMG!!! These people are still at it! I can't believe that this scam has been going on for well over 2 years. I only learned of it within the past few days. They apparently have a new email: morris6727@yahoo.com. (Seems they are consistently using a "Yahoo.com" email address, using different names.) I thought it seemed a somewhat suspicious and began researching the user name, the address of the home that I was interested in renting and ran a background check on the name/phone number provided. Basically, what I learned is that the name and number do not match, they are running this scheme in multiple countries, and almost all 50 states in the US. I have a close family friend that works for the FBI and I am turning over all of the information I have collected. Additionally, for some of the unfortunate people that didn't do their homework before foolishly sending their money overseas to an unknown person, not only have been scammed out money, but since they gave them all their personal information, their identities have also been stolen. I hope they catch these S.O.B.'s before they take advantage of another innocent victim!

This scam continues... Craigslist had a property listed for Ferndale, WA with a price of $700 /mo. Nice pictures, and was interested. The email that came back didn't seem right, and the price seemed low.

I am copying the letter, just so others are aware of the scam. Problem is, whoever is doing this now skims the owner's name and inserts into email.

August 2011 and this scam is stiiiiiillllllll going. Like the other posters, I saw a great rental offer on craigslist (Georgia for me) and sent an email to inquire. The terrible English of the reply and the information requested in the "rental application" seemed suspicious (why would a missionary in Nigeria want to know if I work late nights?). I won't repost the text because it is word-for-word the same as others already here. The name and email associated with the scam in my case was Richard Spratley, spratley_richard@yahoo.com.
