What Has Been Your Experience With Real Estate Coaching

Though "interesting" at times, 2012 has been a productive year for me.  For 2013 I would like to build on this momentum and hopefully take it to the next level.

To help facilitate this I am considering professional coaching. So far, Dirk Zeller's Real Estate Champions, and the Mike Ferry Organization have both caught my eye.

I would love to hear of your experience with professional coaching. Good, bad, or somewhere in between, all feeback is encouraged. Do you think the coaching was beneficial? Would love some advice from the ActiveRain crew!

I think your ActiveRain Accountability group is the best for time and money.. I don't buy that the money spent on an expensive coach is in your best interest..I've seen too many people get ripped off..

So many of the "popular" names are so old-school. I would never consider coaching from someone who started it "back in the day".

Your Coach Helping You Create Successful Outcomes

Doug,  Here is what I can offer.  First of all understand that a coach is not a consultant, mentor, or accoutability partner.  A coach is not to provide answers and tell you what you should be doing.  It is to help you develop the potential that lies within you so that you increase your capability to overcome all obstacles and achieve all of your goals.

A good coach will do a mutual evaluation with you before he or she agrees to work with you.

Most of all coaching is a one to one relationship and it involves trust.

I'm with Donna Harris. I was previously at KW. I never participated in the MAPS training but KW was pretty much following Gary Keller's plan from way back when. Don't get me wrong, I know some people are quite successful calling 100 people a day from expired lists. That's just not my style. I wanted to incorporate blogging into my business plan and they weren't really encouraging that as a marketing or prospecting tool. Any decent coach these days, should also be well-versed in websites, SEO and blogging. Just my opinion.

Guess I don't get it.  At a fundamental visceral level I don't see how a prospective client could reconcile that, while I claim to be a top notch person at the core of my business, I still need a "coach" to pull me through the process of implementing an enormous archive of free and for-fee training classes, webinars, youtube tutorials, etc.

Other than that is seasoned experience, plus a track record of proven results, and I don't see how coaching, advertising claims or wishful thinking can compensate for those.

I highly respect the great coaches, whoever they are, but I cannot grasp why "I need one" versus why "I want one."  My thought is, rather than a coach... like Nike says:  "Just do it."

We have dabbled in Brian Buffini and a few other courses, but I'm not a huge fan.  Beyond getting a good idea or two, it's a bunch of rah rah crap that I'm not a huge fan of.  I'm pretty self motivated, so a coach or an accountability partner isn't needed.  Just my two cents cause you asked.

I've heard agents swear by Brian Buffini but have never experienced a coach myself.  I was always advised to "look in the mirror" if you want a raise.  We have the tools within to succeed.  Love the Active Rain group idea!

I've tried coaching numerous times with some of the best. My personality is such that I start feeling rebelious... I find it's more useful for me (because I know what I need to do) to self-motivate and have an accountability partner who is struggling with the same issues.

I will give my honest opinion and please forgive me if it sounds self serving since I coach brokers and agents.

The big coaches out there have good systems. If you are looking for a system that is a one size fits all then one of them is going to be a great fit. I have found that most agents who use these systems are not being coached by the main guy but rather his underlings. They tend not to have personlized attention in a way that really grows your business.

I believe in systems. I believe the most important part of growing a business is #1- get a good one on one coach #2 - work more on yourself than you do no your business #3- surround yourself with like minded business people #4 create your systems that fit for you #5 automate those systems #6 delegate ALL of the tasks that you yourself do not have to personally to.

The problem with generalized systems is that one size does not fit all. I had a broker client who only had 100 people on his SOI list. He loved the Brian Bufini by referral only system. But when he applied it to his list of 100- well, they all started to get mad at him because he could only repeat the same thing over and over again with the same 100 people. So I consulted him that that was not the best fit for him.  Katerina

Katerina is correct. If you want to spend a bunch of money and buy a system, it likely will not work precisely for you unless you fit the model of how and why it was created - or you are brand new with no habits at all. I prefer and only coach people one-on-one with their specific needs in mind. :)

Doug,

An accountability partner or group likely won't work as you envision it because both people will need to have a specific business plan - most salespeople don't - and the partner would have to know more about your business than you - unlikely. :)

Doug, you have to consider Joe Stumpf before you make a decision. I had tried Brian Buffini and Chri Leader and invetigated Mike Ferry and Richard Rollins (I think that was his name). I bit the bullet and dived in to Joe Stumpf last July and have had mazing results. I am netting more (more than 50%) by working less, leaving me more quality time with my family - a priority for me. Call Barb Cunningham @ 1.800.950.7325 X1351 (my coach) and she will connect you with the right people. They are offering a free month to sample the program and the coaching. Barb can send you the details. Any system works if you follow it, I found that Joe Stumpf feels so natural to me and is received so well by buyers ad sellers alike.

My company is heavily invested in the Mike Ferry program. We are expected to attend several events each year (offered at a large discount because of our participation), and several folks are using the individual coaching as well. When I first started (I was also new to real estate), I was put off by the salesmanship aspect of Ferry's program. Over the years, however, I've been able to find several aspects of his system that really do work for me and I think I can adapt the rest to be useful as well. Personal coaching is way beyond my budget, however. I believe it's at least $1000 a month for individual coaching.

Doug, I'll give you an angle which may not go well with some, but just some ideas to consider.

Don't put the cart before the horse. Keep in mind that coaches are also serving their interests first - selling you a 'system'. Not necessarily yours. All the coaches sell a 'system' that you must mostly comply to. It's like having a boss that keeps you in line because you can't do it on your own - as in you need supervision.

I think the first thing to do is to write your business plan - broken down by your P&L and your financial projections, goals and objectives. Then write your marketing plan with a timeline with strategies and tactics to match those goals. Determine what the strategies and actionables are to meet your plan. Develop a secret weapon that provides you with a competitive advantage. Could be as simple a regular task that you actually do. Most people fail in implementation. A lot of ideas, but they just don't do what they plan to do.

Then look for bits and pieces from what's available out there from the major RE coaches out there that fit "your" plan. Not the other way around. You'll find that the main two ideas for each will give you plenty to deal with.

Finally, don't work a for a system - have the system work for you.

Hey Doug,

I know that Coaching can be good for some. I truly believe there are those that benefit from it. But I am not interested in a real estate coach because I view them as cheeseballs who just want to sell their book or dvd so I can listen in on how they made money in their market. What works in Nevada likely will not work the same way in Houston. Just my opinion

I find it interesting that there are a number of answers to your question about their experience with coaching that haven't ever actually been "coached".  There is a difference in the agent doing 15 deals a year and wanting to do 30 and one doing 60 and wanting to do 120...and still have a lot of quality free time to spend with their family. Coaching isn't for everyone...but neither is 120 transactions a year.

Ken (#31),

You are right. Coaching is much more than handing out assignments and collecting book reports. Results are what count - and relationships. There has to be a good fit with the coach and the student. :)

I've had a coach, more or less since 1996, I think it's essential.

Micahel E. Gerber & Brian Buffini have been my two primary coaches.
