HONOR FLIGHT – A WAY TO HONOR AND THANK OUR VETERANS

My father-in-law went to Washington D. C. in October on an Honor Flight from San Francisco. Honor Flight Network is a “non-profit organization created solely to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices. We transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill.” http://www.honorflight.org/The World War II Memorial was not completed until 2004.

       Honor Flight

There are Honor Flight chapters across the United States. My father-in-law flew to D. C. as a beneficiary of the graciousness of Honor Flight of Northern California. http://www.honorflightnorcal.org/

The flights and tours that Honor Flight Network provides World War II veterans are absolutely free. The veterans are accompanied by Guardians.  Many of the veterans have mobility and other limitations that can be expected when the group that is comprised mostly of octogenarians. The group from Northern California flew out on a Friday and returned on Sunday. Upon arrival in D. C. they were greeted with a fanfare and treated like heroes for the entire trip. Upon their return, they were greeted by family and supporters waving flags and welcome home signs.

I happened upon an Honor Flight group at BWI in October - perhaps it was the one your FIL participated in - and was deeply and profoundly moved. My FIL is also a WWII vet and a Purple Heart recipient. That was, indeed, the Greatest Generation.

I had heard the term Honor Flight, but I didn't know what it was about. Thanks for enlightening me. What a wonderful experience for the veterans and an honor for everyone involved.

The volunteers at BWI for the Honor Flight group I saw had t-shirts that said "Honor Flight Volunteer- We Can't All Be Heroes!" I loved that.

Susan: Yes. Thank you to our Veterans for all they have done and our Active Members of the Military for what they continue to do.

Julie: From what I have heard and the photos that I have seen the visit to the WW II Memorial and other memorials including Arlington National Cemetery are very impressive and moving for all of the Veterans.

Melissa: Lucky you! I am sure you were touched by the experience.

Sarah: Thanks for spreading the word. I had never heard of Honor Flight Network until a relative volunteered as a guardian to accompany veterans from Northern Wisconsin. It was because he planted the seed that my FIL eventually made the trip. There is a waiting list.

Suzi: It is truly a way to offer thanks for what our Vets have done.

Christina: Go to www.HonorFlight.org. Check on the Regional Hubs link in the top banner.

Michael: The more people who know about Honor Flight, the more Veterans will be served.

Paula: We cannot thank them enough. They merit our thanks and respect all year not just on Veterans Day.

John, that's a well-deserved free trip to honor the shrinking group of WWII veterans and heroes.  The greatest generation served and sacrificed without expectation of compensation.  I'm glad they're getting the recognition they've earned.  My dad was a WWII air force enlistee, not a draftee, simply out of a sense of duty and rightness for a cause.
