How Can You Help Your Community?

By
Real Estate Agent with Associate Broker, Momentum Realty

As we move toward the holidays, many of us shift gears to menu planning, party going and gift buying. But it is an important time to think about your community (and beyond!) for ways that you can help others. We are so fortunate in this country, but there are always those around us who can use some help to get back on track.  Whether it be in resources or time, there is a need that just about anyone can fill.

I spent this morning picking up some supplies to send up to New Jersey.  One of my clients/friends has teamed up with a couple of other folks and they are coordinating with a community coordinator in N.J.  to deliver supplies directly to families in need. They are going to load up a truck and drive it up. The items that we send will go directly to Superstorm Sandy victims. Of course, monetary donations to those who have lost everything are also greatly appreciated. One way to do this quickly and effectively is to Text REDCROSS to 90999. The $10 donation goes right onto your cellphone bill. It is an easy way to make a donation without leaving your desk!

Every community has needs. If your budget does not allow for monetary donations, why not give of your time? There are shelters, there are young children who need mentoring or tutors, there are older folks who need help with transportation, there are libraries and hospitals who need volunteers. There are local charities doing coat and toy drives. There are many food drives. You can adopt a family and make their Christmas wishes come true. The list is really endless.

This holiday season, as you are putting together your plans, include some time for helping in your community. At a time of year when we focus on how thankful we are, you can be sure that your small effort will make a big difference in someone's life!

Holly, there is a local organization here called Graceworks. It provides services to Williamson County residents. I love that my service and donations to this organization go to help local families. I also appreciate that organizations like the Red Cross assists victims who are out of my area.

Tammie, That is a great resource to have in your community. We have a couple here, LINK and Reston Interfaith that serve the local community, too.
