This recipe has been handed down by the Romes. My husband's father was one of 12 and his grandmother used to cook this cake on a wood stove. The recipe was given to me by Aunt Reva Rome.

My daughter Erica, makes it the best!

Sounds good. I've never baked a cake before with vinegar in it. You have me really curious about the taste and I plan on making this for my family. Thank you.

Margaret the looks so delicious, I might try making it when I have company.  Ginger Salas gave me her mother's brownie recipe and that was awesome.  I have made it for my open houses as well as friends and family.

Yum!  I will pass the recipe to my daughter, Stacy, who is the baker in our family.  Thanks for the reminder.  I need to find my mother's recipe box for one of our family favs.  Later. . .

Toothpick better be way more than moist!! Check it at 25 minutes and every 5 minutes after that.  Better underdone than overdone (Margaret and I will eat the thing raw if necessary). Speaking of which, don't forget to lick the bowl.

Helpful hint: Make it a huge, HEAPING teaspoon of baking soda.  Much closer to 2 tsp than 1.

I spray the sides of the pan with Pam for baking (it's like spray-on flour) just in case it doesn't feel like coming out of there.

And don't forget that Lee says frosting required, while I say frosting prohibited.  YMMV.

:)

Margaret, I love Erica's little comments.  ?There is nothing better than a cake made from scratch, My mom only makes her cakes from scratch and usually makes one per week!

Margaret, it sounds divine and with low fat sour cream it should be great for cholesterol watchers but substituting margarine would change the consistency too much.

Debi, Give it a try. I noticed that June #14 makes a pumpkin pie with vinegar. Go check it out.

Praful, Hope your daughter enjoys!

Jennifer, With the AR cookbook, you will have lots of choices.

Tom, It is.

Mike, Are you going to give it a try?

Norma, Thanks for stopping by.

Jimmy, You have been missed!

Mary, Hope you find the recipe box.

Er, Love your additions to our famous Rome cake. Hmm...more baking soda?

Sheila, I think you will like it.

Kathy, Let us know how it turns out.

Cheryl, You and I will just take a picture of the cake.

Christine, Where does your mom buy her 'scratch' ? I  love Erica's comments.

June, Leaving out the butter, eggs and sour cream might make it lower in cholesterol.. but at what price?
