The History of the Craftsman Style Home -     Find One in Nashville!

If you drive down Music Row here in Nashville you won’t find many brick Commercial buildings or mirrored glass skyscrapers; popular structures that one would expect to find in the heart of the city that produces most of the Country music you hear on the radio. Instead you will find two quaint and humble streets that look more like streets you'd find in a neighborhood featured in a Christmas catalogue. In fact, the mecca of Country music is primarily made up of what appear to be warm and cozy single-family homes - homes known none other than the Craftsman Style Home (also known as the Arts & Crafts Style Home).

Introduced in the late 1900’s during the British Movement by staunch socialist William Morris , the Craftsman Style Home hones its crafty, yet simpler domestic style as being a reaction to the complicated and embellished design of the Victorian Era – an era noted for being “over-decorated” and aristocratic; an architectural style stemming from the Industrial Revolution. The Craftsman Style Home focuses on the appeal of the hand-made appearance, rather than the mass-produced, utilizing locally handcrafted wood, glass and metal work creating objects that are both simple and elegant.

Common Identifiable Features of The Craftsman Style Home:

      ·        Deep overhanging eaves

      ·        Tapered, square columns supporting roof

      ·        Expansive front porches

      ·       Low-pitched or ‘A’ frame roof lines

      ·        Hand crafted stone or woodwork siding

      ·        Exposed rafters or decorative brackets under eaves

      ·        Earth-tone/neutral exterior paint color

How affordable is a Craftsman Style Home in Nashville?

The Craftsman Style Home showcases a style that represents the hardworking American family in a modest yet comfortable & attractive domestic setting. The sheer intention of the Craftsman home was designed to be affordable. As with all real estate though, location, location, location is the strongest reflection on a home price.

For example, the Nations area in Nashville provides Craftsman style homes for under $100,000.

Head over to East Nashville and you can find a Craftsman style home from the low $100,000s to around $400,000.

Sylvan Heights has a handful of choice Craftsman style homes for around $150,000 and Sylvan Park takes it up from there to around $500,000.

Try the 12th South and Belmont areas of Nashville for the $300,000-$900,000 price range.

Look to Historic Richland/West End and Belmont Boulevard for the million dollar Craftsmans!

So whether the trend of the Craftsman Style Home is found out in the country, in the suburbs, or in the heart of an urban area like Music Row, it is a popular style that much of America has adopted: a style that is synonymous with comfort, flexibility, history and, frequently, affordability!

There are a few attractive Arts and Crafts homes located in the Springfield TN Historic District. It is just 20 miles north of Nashville but well worth the drive to check out. This small City dates back to the 1790's so there is a wide variety of building styles that have survived.
