So, what is he about to blog about?  You might be wondering where this is going :)

Actually, it's on the subject of our four legged friends and their need for space.  And a huge disclaimer, this was not my idea, our citizens and City came up with this solution.  I'm just a lowly Parks & Rec Commissioner who was lucky enough to come along when this was gaining steam.

The Problem: Where to put a dog park in our town.  No easy task as there were no obvious locations.  The existing dog park was an afterthought attached to a school in a highly inaccessible space.  It wasn't very interesting to use for dogs or humans.

The Solution: Dedicate a section of one of our larger parks, actually the outfield of one of the baseball fields, for use on a limited hours basis.  While dealing with initial health and safety concerns, the self policing dog owner community succeeded in convincing the city and community at large that none existing.  Even better, these evening off leash sessions found both the dogs AND their owners socializing happily and making lifelong friends.

That's democracy, that's community.  Taking a flexible approach, using what we already have and self policing is not new, but in application it is powerful.

Anything like that happening in your town?
