How do YOU find time to write?

By

Help! I want to blog, and blog, and blog! I've got a lot to say, information to share, and a unique perspective that just might entertain or inspire ..... But I just can't seem to find TIME to write.  5 o'clock

Sound familiar to anyone? I think there is a proficient blogger hidden somewhere within me. Problem is, there seems to be no coordinating "hidden time" in my busy schedule to nurture her and let her loose. Today I read Mimi Foster's list of blogging ideas for the holiday season, and it really got me pumped up.

I've got the bones of some good writer's habits in place. For example, I carry a handy steno pad with me always. It fits neatly into any purse or bag I  own, and is the perfect tool to collect all of my thoughts, phone messages and reminders, to-dos, etc.... everything in one place. I've accumulated plenty of great blog ideas in these notebooks, but seldom find the time to actually sit still and write a post.

But I want to. girl writing

Daily!

This is the suggestion of my new AR friend, Richard Weisser, and my goal for the coming year. Richard is the most proficient real estate blogger in the state of Georgia, and he says write five short paragraphs daily and soon it will become easier and easier. He does it, as subscribers well know, so I should be able to do it, too......if only could find TIME to write!!!

I'd love to pull it off in 2013, but know that to find time to write will mean cutting out something else in my life. What?

So, I've turned to my AR community --  busy real estate professionals like me -- to share the ways you all make time for writing.

Help! All suggestions are welcomed (and needed).

How do you all do it?

Good morning Elva - I spend about 30 minutes every morning during breakfast working on the blog, and then another 20-30 at lunch time - nearly every day. I round it out with a few hours on the weekend to make sure I have enough drafts in the pile to last me the week. It's a very time consuming habit, but one that I think it's important enough to dedicate the time to do.

Habit. I do my social media and blogging first thing in the morning while having my coffee. I'm an early riser, 5:30 am. By noon or so my day is done except for handling incoming business.

I spend time answering questions for others on several different networks. I copy my responses and place them in draft form on AR. Then when time allows I go in an expand upon my thoghts and make an article.

Blooging like anything else we want to do consitently requires discipline.

It's a habit for me.  Everybody talks about how busy they are and how they just don't have time to breathe, etc.  Not me.  With no kids at home and both of us having home offices, we have time.  I usually write in the mornings or in the evenings after everything is done.  Welcome to AR and good luck to you!

I have piles of blogging material,  done the research etc, and it seems that  getting a blog out on a daily basis is a real challenge. Your post has me thinking????

All these great ideas being suggested Elva.  I think it helps is you set goals and objectives in mind of what you would like to communicate that adds value to the readers. Bit by bit you develop a mindset. Then the ideas will come to you anytime - just write them on paper immediately, or on your portable device which in my case is my trusty iPad. You will be surprised how many you will come up with.

I try to do any writing at the very beginning, or the very end of my day.  I find those times to the be the quietest and its easier to get a post done.

Richard is a great guy and I've been reading his posts here since I started myself.  I'm a pretty prolific blogger myself but I found that to keeping writing those articles I had to make it part of my routine.  Here's my tip:

Add blogging to your schedule.  Put in in a time slot that is typically free.  Work it into your daily routine and after a while, it'll come naturally.

Elva:

You have desire so the rest should be easy.  I use my emails of questions from buyers and sellers as the basis of posts about buying and selling real estate.  Then at the end of the day, I try to put some ideas in draft form and the next day when I am waiting for a call back I work on the post.  It may take me 2 or 3 days before a post is ready to be published.  Fortunately, I have 3 or 4 in draft form on Google Drive which may be ready to be published.  You just have find a time that works for you to write and schedule writing for that day every day.

Evelyn in #48:  Those are some really great ideas.  It sounds like you've got an excellent system working for you... and I bet they DO generate some calls from both buyers and sellers.  Good.  For.  You!

Do you have time to go to the gym or take your kids to soccer practice? If so, this is so much easier.  You just need to put together a couple of hours a day and look at it as prospecting.

I want to start blogging as this is new to me.  This post gave me some really good ideas as to how and when to set aside the time.  It is true.....you need to make it part of your daily routing!

I use a goal planning sheet and time management.  I have set a goal for activities that promote my business including blogging.  I put them into my schedule.  That helps me.

For me, I try to be at my computer by 6 am every morning so I can devote the first two hours to working on posts, answering email, going through my "to do" list for the day.  I can get more done between 6 and 9 am than I can the rest of the day!  Ditto at night - the tv is rarely on in our house, too many other things to do.

When you make the turn and see that blog posts take some of the heavy lifting away from old ways to market, you find it natural. Like breathing air, drinking water and the new routine. 85% of folks are on line, so your way to market your property listings, your area, your brand should be concentrated with blogging, websites, video, imagery and anything razzle dazzle helpful on line. Blogging is one neat conveyor belt of information and pump up the videos that are sit back, toggle and see, hear about the listings, area, sparingly on the brand.

Oh, my goodness. Take a day off from AR, and look what happens!! Thank you all for sharing how you do it. Many of you have reinforced what I already know.....I'll have to carve out some consistent time to write daily, maybe move something else out of the way. Time may not be not manageable, but choices certainly are.

There are so many good suggestions in these comments, I know that some of them will work for me. A personal blogging plan is beginning to take shape and seem doable, thanks to your input.

Don't you just love the power of community?

I help brokers build businesses they love.

This is friendly advice.

Blog posts are like children. You don't send them out into the world without supervising and managing them. In this case, you put up a post and then ignored it. You got featured on AR, and rather than being here for each and every comment and then responding to the person who took the time to write you a comment...you didn't come back. That's not the way to build a following, and most importantly, a base for interaction.

So, blog away with all your great thoughts. If you want people to interact with and to develop a business with...show up when you post and manage the conversations.

Point taken, Leslie, thanks for the advice. Along with making the time to write well and helpfully and find appropriate visuals, I'll also need time to interact with readers and keep up with the conversations that happen. This reminder will be helpful in setting realistic blogging goals.

When I get home I log on to AR and write the titles to my ideas for a new blog post. I may fill in a bit of the first paragraph and then save to draft until I have time to write more.

I usually write late at night. This is the time my college daughter is in her room for the night and my husband has gone to bed. I turn on the radio really low so it will not bother me but provide some music. I then just let it flow. I can pump out a post pretty fast.

I usually add pictures later the next day. Know that I am a horrible grammatical writer and see errors almost immediately after I make it public. So back in I go.

Good to have you on AR I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Sussie, thanks for your contribution to this conversation. It is working out that way for me, too. I find myself doing what blogging I do late at night. I'd like to better integrate it into my work day, though. Haven't quite figured that out yet, but I'm not giving up.
