Earlier this week I stumbled upon one of the St. Johns County Library’s Bookmobiles; what a delightful find! While many people now use e-readers, there is still a considerable need for library materials and services and the Bookmobile is another vehicle (pun intended!) to connect those services with the people who need them.
The Bookmobile first started in 2001 as a way to service elderly and disabled citizens who otherwise may not have access to the public library.
Seven years later a second vehicle was added allowing the library to extend its services to residents at nursing and assisted-living homes, day care centers and schools, medical centers, recreation centers and parks as well as to residents in out-lying areas of the county.
The Bookmobile lends a wide selection of books, cds, movies, playaways, magazines and mp3s, and also provides patrons with internet access through a laptop.
The women on the Bookmobile I visited were friendly, knowledgeable and extremely helpful in suggesting books for my reluctant teenage reader. While I am fortunate enough to live within a 15 minute drive of the local library branch, the Bookmobile stop I visited is just a few miles from my home near the grocer, bank and pharmacy I consistently use. It doesn’t get much more convenient than that!
The St. Johns County Library publishes a schedule with the locations and times of the Bookmobile which operates every weekday as well as some Saturdays. If you have an opportunity, check it out!
