Old Bay- It's the Maryland way.

There are even Old Bay Potato Chips. I do enjoy Old Bay French Fries once in a while. But nothing, absolutely nothing, takes the place of a bunch of Old Bay on a pile of hot steamed crabs on a Summer Day. YUMBO!

Old Bay- It's the Maryland way.

old bayIf you were to visit every household in Maryland and seek out their seasonings in the kitchen, I would imagine that you would find the very distinctive can of Old Bay in 90% of homes. It's a Maryland tradition.

Old Bay has a long and interesting 70 year history in Maryland that comes hand in hand with the local tradition of "Picking Crabs". A peppery flavor, most true Marylanders coat their crustacean in thick layers of Old Bay. Maryland crabsAs of bland English Irish descent I have always horrified my friends, neighbors and co-workers when I insist on washing my crab and eliminating the Old Bay before I start the digging for crab meat ritual. As I become more acclimated and after 15 years of living in Central Maryland, I now tend to brush off the Old Bay these days rather than sinking my crab in a bucket of water. I even order wings with Old bay seasoning these days too.

Old Bay GarageOld Bay is getting around. In the city of Baltimore the "Old Bay Parking Garage" celebrates "Baytriotism" and is an amusing sight. If big stadiums can be named after banks, as in the M&T Bank Ravens Stadium, why can't a parking lot be named after a local seasoning?

I think most Baltimore homes do have a least one can of Old Bay.
