Using Your Computer As a Hotspot for Your Ipad or Phone
There are times, when for some reason, the wireless router in my home just performs at less than opitmum unless I am really close to it. I think it's when the weather changes and the signal coming into the house over the ethernet wiring from the fiberoptic system gets weaker. The cable company usually has to come and make some adjustments about twice a year.
There is also some hard wiring in our home for internet service, the ethernet cords come from the router and are available in various rooms for use if the wireless signal is not working.
My new toy, an Ipad has to have wireless. No ports for ethernet. I have discovered that I use my computer as a an ad hoc wireless hotspot for my Ipad and for my phone. You probably already knew that but if not, and if you have occasion to need it, as I do, it's really quite simple.
in Windows 7 and probably earlier windows versions, Go to your control panel and click on Network and Internet, then Network and Sharing Center. Next click on "Set up a new connection or network". In the window that opens, click on "set up a wireless ad hoc (computer to computer) network. Click next, and then next again. Give it a name. I named mine Toshiba because that's the computer I set it up on. Then I choose "no authentication (open)" because when I chose the WPA-2 Personal, it wants a security key and for some reason, that causes problems with connecting to my Ipad.
My Ipad then finds the wireless network "Toshiba" and I'm in business.
Liek I said, you may not have reason to need to set your computer up as a hotspot, but more than once, it has come in handy for me to be able to do that, with the broadband fibre optic system that we have at my house.
