Easing Fears, Explaining Doubts and Melting Cold, Cold Hearts

Easing fears and explaining doubts is a large part of what we do as REALTORS.  Usually we are trying to overcome the doubts caused by earlier experiences with other REALTORS.

Even though real estate agents are beginning to be thought of more as professionals, we still battle the image of some kind of shark out there for just the commission.  If that were true, surely there's an easier product to promote.  The confusion, in my mind, is that the public thinks we are out there to "sell" or "talk someone into" houses like someone sells a vacuum cleaner.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

If you as an agent are trying to talk someone into a purchase...maybe it's time to take that vacuum cleaner sales course.  Most people who come to agents have pretty much talked themselves into buying or selling a house.  That's not what they need us for.  They need us to help them not hurt themselves in the process.

Often, to do the best job we can, we have to get rid of the baggage the buyer or seller may have arrived at our doorstep with...like the premise that we're only in it for the money.  Sure, we want to make a good living but this profession is much more complicated than that.  I'd say that at minimum half of the time we start out the real estate relationship clearing up misconceptions and taking the time to ease fears and explain doubts before we can move on.

Norah Jones obviously is having a similar issue.  She'd like to know why she can't erase doubts and melt a cold, cold heart.  Here's a nice jazzy and bluesy way to start the week.

And a personal note...try to get your Thanksgiving groceries early in the week and if you must start your holiday gift buying early, please consider waiting until at least black Friday.  Let's try to make Thanksgiving Day itself a less popular time to shop-talk about being in it only for the money!  Everyone deserves to share in a national day off occasionally.

Hi Mona,

I have a Realtor that will do anything to sell a home. But if the client wants to look at another home it's O.K. with her. She just goes with the flow till they find the one they want.

No pressure from her at all. I like that.

Have a wonderful day in Sylva.

Best, Clint McKie

Clint, thanks. We do try to do everything to help someone make a decision until they get overwhelmed with choices and then it's back to the drawing board and get reminded of the end goal.

Good morning, Mona....that used car salesman attitude will always be a stigma.... before there was a code of ethics, it was velcro your pockets or you'll lose your money.... some of that reputation continues....

Hi Barbara, I guess all we can do is keep our heads above the crowd and behave honestly.  Have a good week.

Houses sell themselves. There's no need for an overbearing salesperson. Agent is there to help decipher information.

Great post. If I can add, "not taking things personally" is key to real estate sales success and success in most other industries as well!

I agree, there is a lot of negative perceptions about real estate agents that we must overcome with new clients.  Great blog.

Hi Roger, sharklike is one approach I've seen used but never results in referral business.  Glad you like the tune.

Jill, deciphering information is an excellent way to describe some of what we do.

Rich, correct.  Neither the buyer, seller nor us need to ever take some of these things personally.

Thanks Jason.  From you, I'd trust the vacuum cleaner spiel.

Lanise,  Negativity can become overwhelming and that's why it is essential to recognize everything before it slips into your body.I knew what was coming.

Valerie, that sounds like fun and the venue of grey hair will be on and off stage, lol.  The Quadrophenia album remains one of my favorites to this day.
