Thanksgiving Safety
With one family Thanksgiving in the books and one more to go I normally stay "safely out of the cooking area". I am just not allowed in the kitchen until its time to dish up. For those hosting and cooking the big meal here is a repost of some Thanksgiving safety tips.
The Holiday season is upon us, and most families are putting together a large Holiday spread for the family. The last thing you want is to spoil this Holiday season with a kitchen fire. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the amount of kitchen fires during the Holiday season triples, especially on Thanksgiving!
There have been several videos showing turkey frying being a very dangerous method of cooking the Holiday bird. There are higher risks due to hot oil spills, scalding, injury and fire. You may want to consider a commercial source if you like deep fried turkey. If you do your own deep fried turkey, here is a great recipe.
Other tips offered by the fire departments -
- Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking. If you have to leave, even for a short period, turn off the stove.
- Use a timer and check your food frequently.
- Avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.
- Keep children away from the cooking area and establish a "no kid zone" of three feet around the stove.
- Use the back burners whenever possible to avoid the possibility of pots being knocked over and off the stove.
- Never hold a child while you are cooking.
- Keep anything that can catch on fire away from the stove, including wooden spoons, paper, plastic, food packaging, towels and oven mitts.
- Clean food and grease from your stove top right away.
Enjoy this Holiday season!
