Do Favorite Words Influence Your Life

Do you have a favorite word? Do favorite words influence your life or does your life influence your favorite words?

A favorite word, color, flower, song it all sounds sort of juvenile if not down right childish! Doesn't it?

Have you ever considered why kids have these favorites? I've concluded that child and adult a like, adopt these seemingly frivolous favorites because they are comforting. As adults we too seek comfort and inspiration in these simple things.

I have favorites and they do comfort and inspire me.

My favorite song has to be the Beach Boy's "I Get Around" because it so well describes Lynn Bingham, Tom Guisel, and I in high school and college. It was also contemporary to us. I miss those guys, but the song always reminds me of the good times.

My favorite flower the Tulip. The Tulip always reminds me of digging up those damn bulbs in the fall and replanting them in the spring, something I did for many years with my Mother. Tulips make me feel good.

My favorite color has to be variations of red. My first new car, the only one I ordered to all my personal spec's was Vermilion Red. Brenda and I painted a small, drab bedroom Bright Red once, our daughter was conceived in that room. Red makes me feel good.

Again I don't know if my favorites influenced my life or my life influenced my favorites. (Redundancy is my second favorite word, because it's the way I learn and teach.) I do know that as salesmen, business men, and real estate gurus we're bombarded with negativity each day and our own doubts each night. Little things, pleasant memories can help you feel good, feeling good makes for more sales, more success, feeling good can get you through the tough times!

All of which brings me to my favorite word: FORTUITOUS! My life has been one fortuitous event followed by another. There is opportunity even in adversity if you look for it, if you recognized it! Life is in deed fortuitous! Don't mistake fortuitous for lucky, if a hundred dollar bill blows in your window that's luck, if you use it to publish you first book and sell a million copies that's fortuitous!

Our current mortgage crisis is in deed fortuitous! Never in our life time has there been so much opportunity. Being in real estate today is fortuitous for you have all the tools in place to seceded! The difference between bad luck and fortuitous opportunity is all in your head!

I'm partial to Shucks, Geez.  promulgate, pursuant, perfidy, wonderful, oxymoron, spectacular and the old reliable **&%$(())++^%%.

Wonder what they say about me.

Yes, certain words can be very powerful to me, conjuring images and feelings in the way that hearing a particular song often does. I'd love to share a few of those words, but they're my secret! :)

Fun post! Can't wait to see what others write!

Bill - I'm partial to 'freaking', though I also tend to love the words eclectic, pithy, astute, and what Lenn said:-)

Hmmm.... I use a lot of "bad words"... must not say anything very good about me.  Not sure I have any favorites, just most used.  : )

Can't pick a favorite song... right now I listen to Amy Winehouse a lot.  "Bad" girl, "bad" words... I think I'm in trouble.  : )

Chris,

Words do say something.

Educated people have a choice. I pity those that don't posses any alternatives to four letter adjectives.

For those that have a choice there are reasons to use these so called "bad words!" Words can reflect strong emotions, releasing adrenalin, testosterone and other chemicals I know little or nothing about. Some how when you hit your thumb with a hammer a loud "bad word" helps. It is also necessary to commutate, when talking to some people it's necessary to momentarily dip to their level.

It always amazes me that when some people are anonymous they consider it licensee to be vulgar. In 1973 we all got CB radios by the end of the year the chatter was so vulgar that we no longer turned them on. Today's equivalent is the "rants and raves" on Craigeslist.

Damn good of you to comment.

Bill A, What amazes me is that you are definitely a wordsmith and very articulate, yet you misspell many words. What's up with that? Does it say something about you or me?

I'm basically a positive person. I have trouble seeing the negatives. To me, the future is only going up. Set backs are so fleeting and ephemeral I disregard them altogether. Really! So I guess one of my favorite words is "development" in all its meanings.

Plus, like you, I tend to be pedantic.

I've never given favorite words much thought and right now they elude me.  I do like adjectives a lot. One of my favorite 'fun' words is GROOVY.  Please don't ask me why-I have no idea, it's just plain neat-o.

Bill R,

I've been trying to decided how to address this all day.

Spelling wasn't a problem until I started school. I've fought it everyday since. On the other hand my math skills and logic are exceptional. Who can explain such things? I was a working photo-journalist in high school and college, while others had editors I had a designated speller! We bare our souls in these discussions including my spelling problems, I like to think it adds to my boyish charm.

You ask so I'll answer, your need to point out my frailty in a public forum, says more about you than me. I too am very positive. I believe we find what we seek and I find more good than bad.

Yes I can be very pedantic.

I have a lot of favorite words... some appropriate and some not appropriate for this post.  One of my favorite words is "fabulous". A song that's coming to my mind right now, although not quite a favorite, is "Get Up Off Of That Thang, and Make Yourself Feel Better."  I like Lenn's favorite word, too  **&%$(())++^%%

Bill A, I haven't asked before but now I think it is appropriate, "Are you left-handed?"

What I have done about my spelling problem is that I almost always run everything through spell check. Just to save embarrassment. I wasn't sure about a couple words here but the spell check gave me a pass.

BTW I should have caught "escalating" in my comments on another of your posts.
