Thanksgiving is right around the corner Quick tips to avoid Garbage Disposal backups!

As most of you know this is the biggest Cooking & Eating day of the Year. There is no room for last minute disasters. Garbage Disposal Breakdown is a disaster so avoid it. Best advice I can give is, only you use your disposal when you really need to use it!

Be mindful of the items you are placing in the garbage disposal and if you live in a condominium or an apartment complex and you are not on the bottom floor be mindful of your neighbors below!

What are three of the biggest reasons Garbage Disposals do not work or they back up:

The biggest culprit is TOO LITTLE WATER! Often time’s garbage disposals break down, because there is not enough water flowing through them when you are grinding down the food remnants. To prevent this from happening, keep a steady stream of water flowing out of your kitchen sink, because as you grind the food remnant this will save the disposer. Then the last thing you want to do, is turn the water off last. Please turn off the disposal before the water, you will thank me later!

The second biggest destroyer of Garbage Disposers is: Fats, Oils and Grease in general. Under No circumstances pour any type of fat, oil or grease down your garbage disposal, which can lead to clogging your drain and cause a clog further down the system and create a sewage backup in your neighbor’s home as well. Collect your fats, oils and grease, put them in a jar or some container and drop them off at you recycling center or at least throw them in your resident trash area at the minimum.

Lastly Fibrous Rinds they are fruits and vegetable with fibrous rinds such as Lemon peel, orange peel, potato peels they are equally tough enemies of the Garbage Disposal. Amazingly bananas, strawberries and celery stalks will cause clogs as well

Now that you have been warned, Good Luck and Happy Thanksgiving!

I got rid of mine a few years ago and was happy to do so.. Something else that can go wrong and get stopped up. BUT if you have one.. knowing how to prevent a problem is important. You don't want a broken garbage disposal on Thanksgiving Day for sure!

Hi Endre - Useful advice, particularly if you have a septic system on the end of that pipe. Grease is the worst danger - it can congeal anywhere along the line and be expensive to remove. Have a great Thanksgiving - I know you'll be cooking something fantastic.

Endre - These are great tips for anyone who thinks that the garbage disposal can take it all.  As a kid growing up, my parents had one rule, nothing goes down the garbage disposal that can go in the garbage can.  It didn't make a lot of sense, why have the garbage disposal if you couldn't put anything down and through it.  As an adult, one plumber call was all it took to understand their wisdom.  You've warned everyone, let the holiday fun begin!

Endre, I need to send this post to my sister in-law.  I've had to clear her drains more than once because of lack of water running through the system.  It's probably a good idea to run warm water just to keep any fats in the drain liquid until they leave the smaller drain pipes...RUN LOTS OF WATER!!

We live in an area that has mostly septic systems - not public sewer, so using a garbage disposal is highly frowned upon.  :)  I have one, but onley use it very spareingly!  Good tips for heavy users!  Happy Thanksgiving!
