My recent insurance claim after a leaky dishwasher was a royal pain, prompting me to write a blog last week. Now that it’s finally over, I have a few key things I learned from the entire experience.
It Will Be More Important to You, Than to Them. Insurance companies are big operations, and they deal with upsets large and small on a daily basis. Don’t expect them to share your angst nor your sense of urgency.
Get Multiple Bids. The insurance company may bring a contractor out to bid the repairs. You are under no obligation to hire them. Do your homework and find a reputable contractor or company to do the work – one you are comfortable with.
Verify Your Records. If your claim is more than $5000, your mortgage holder may need to endorse the check you receive from your insurance company.
Keep a Paper Trail. Your bank will want copies of EVERYTHING if they are to endorse the check for your claim. Keep it all in one place.
Check and Double Check. You’ll be dealing with large operations – banks and insurance companies. Not all personnel have handled these types of transactions and you may get bounced around a bit. Stay cool
Have a Great Housekeeper on Standby. Having your house torn up is stressful, and the repair work typically leaves a lot of residue. Even if your claim covers housecleaning, make sure you make the appointment in advance.
Let it Go. Ok, now I’ve really got to follow this last item. It’s been about 35 days since this all occurred, and as of yesterday, things are almost back to normal. Forget about it and move on. That’s what I’m going to do.
