Here we are finding ourselves that another Thanksgiving in the year 2012. While shops can’t wait to get up Christmas ornaments and decorations, heck, even my neighbors already have their lights up, I can’t help but stop and just be thankful for not only this holiday, but today.
Today is a great gift.We in America are so blessed beyond our understanding or our comprehension. They say if you have a little change in your pocket or in a jar somewhere in the house you’re richer than 90% of the world’s population. If you have more than one car your among the world’s richest 1 to 2%. That is something hard to grasp. In this day and age where most countries are on the verge of economic failure, struggling to rebuild, or in the midst of civil war, I have to stop and just be thankful for today. Thankful that I got up with air my lungs, health my body and a little cash in my pocket.
While it’s easy to say that on the surface it’s harder to make it a reality for someone else.Every day we buy and sell homes for people and we may not have any investment in their life. Home ownership to someone may be the epitome of the American dream for them. Having something that they can hold tangibly in their hands to call their own is a dream for many. Those that have lost their homes and are now just beginning to rebuild it may be a step in the right direction.
But on the other side of that coin there are so many still struggling, so many that of lost their homes and resorted back to renting or even moving in with friends and family. My heart breaks for those that have fallen under difficult times under no means of their own. Either businesses have failed, marriages have dissolved, or lives have been lost.
The one of the best things we have in this country is the constant reminder that we can always start over. There’s always a fresh start for anyone who really wants to try. We don’t hold anyone down, don’t surrender anyone to their current fate, and don’t hold anyone back that wants to succeed far and above their wildest expectations.
That is the greatest thing about our country. I think about Kristine Ginsberg who gave a part of herself so that her sister may live. What an amazing country we live in to think that we can do this
without an overwhelming fear of infection, risk, sanitary issues, or healthcare. I think of Pippa Williams who came home from vacation only to find her life has been turned upside down and yet has found blessing and Thanksgiving in the hardest of times. I think of Janis Borgueta and the thousands that have struggled through the Sandy hurricane debacle and yet have nothing but blessing and gratefulness to show for it.
We truly live in an amazing country with amazing people doing amazing things every day. Regardless of your religion, political status, financial situation, or lifestyle choice, remember, you’ve got it good. Stop and think about that this holiday season and if you can, lend a little of that goodness to someone else.
