The things I love about Hendersonville are the people, the mountains, and the convenience without all of the big-city headaches. The people in Hendersonville are "small-town friendly." From neighbors...to co-workers...to restaurant staff...to mechanics...to hair-dressers...everybody seems to be accommodating here in Hendersonville. The beauty and tranquility of the mountains must add to the attitude of this friendly town.
Hendersonville is known as "the city of four seasons." No matter what time of year it is, the mountains are absolutely breath-taking. Hendersonville offers anything that one could want; great shopping, dining, golf, sports, jobs - without the stress of a huge city. You can enjoy a mountain-top view, and within fifteen minutes in a car, you can be downtown Hendersonville to shop and dine.
When we bought the property, we were drawn to its uniqueness! Anybody can throw up a new house, but you can't find a true 1920s arts and crafts house sitting on two prime acres, that is convenient to downtown Hendersonville! The quality stonework of almost 100 years ago presented an opportunity to not only preserve a piece of history, but to also create a work of art that is rarely seen in modern construction.
The Hendersonville area is wonderful because it is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, yet you are close to business and recreation. Our house is 1 mile from Crooked Creek golf course, 5 minutes from downtown Hendersonville, less than 10 minutes from The Flat Playhouse and Carl Sandburg's Home, and 30 minutes from the Asheville airport.
A few other things that I can mention are the nearby schools. Henderson County is home to 4 great High Schools and one community college. Our house is less than a mile from Atkinson elementary school, which is a great school with a good track record. We love to hike at Holmes State Forest. It can be fun for the whole family. It features the "talking trees" which is a fun learning experience for all ages! It is also a great place for novice and experienced hikers alike, with trails ranging from easy to advanced. Carl Sandburg's Home is also a fun place to visit; you can tour the home, gardens and grounds of the late great poet, or just spend an afternoon enjoying a good book by the pond, hiking, picnicking, or seeing the goats and other livestock.
Of course we all like different things, we enjoyed riding our bikes around Osceola lake. It is less than 1/2 mile from our house. Not only was it good exercise, you could unwind and enjoy the beautiful landscape. The lake is home to bass, catfish, ducks, geese turtles, many types of birds, and even beavers. We also enjoyed playing Frisbee and kickball with friends and neighbors in the almost 2 acre yard. Our neighborhood is great for all ages. It offers a nice, safe, fun place for children to grow up...as well as a beautiful quaint place to relax and take in some mountain air!
Our utility costs are very reasonable in this house, due to the fact of the quality of construction. The basement walls are 26" thick (18" of rock and 8" of concrete) and the upstairs walls are 16" thick! Combined with double paned windows and modern insulation, this home holds it temperature! We also have a detached garage with 1800 sq. ft. of heated space.
The Duke Energy electric bill (with 2 outdoor street lights included) averages about $150.00 per month. The PSNC natural gas bill averages $75.39 per month (keep in mind that this is for a 96% efficient gas furnace, gas stove, gas hot water heater, gas logs, gas grill, gas wall furnace in garage office, and hanging gas furnace in garage!!!!) The water bill ranges from $25- $28 per month; we have city water. We have no monthly septic bill, because the house has its own septic tank which was installed new in 2006 when we completely rebuilt the house.
