HOMEMADE CHRISTMAS ANIMAL ORNAMENTS

One of my most favorite activities with my family or girl scout troops was making homemade animal Christmas Oranments. Here's the recipe:

DIRECTIONS

Mix 4 cups of unsifted flour

1 cup salt

1 to 1 ½ cups of water

Kneed the clay about 4 or 5 minutes

Do not double the recipe or cut it in half or the clay will not work

Make sure all pieces are the same thickness and flat

Cut out ornaments

Make small holes on the top for hanging after your oranaments are cooled

Create your own animal shapes like wings, beaks and/or other animal parts

Place the animals on a cookie sheet and use various kitchen objects to press in designs.

When adding legs or ears moisten them slightly so they stick together.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and bake for about an hour or longer if they are soft.

NOTE:  Cooking temperatures and results will vary between electric and gas stoves.

When done spread them out to cool.

Decorate with glue using glitter, beads, poster paints, felt tip markers, sea shells, tiny stones or gems.

Spray with a clear fixative to preserve and remind children they are not edible.

Each batch should produce about 6 or 7 critters for your tree.

Patricia,

That sure sounds like fun making ornaments for the tree.  We used to put us a tree until we got into cats.  Our cats are natural leapers and climbers, so an indoor tree would be a delightful arena for their high enery..  We are content on greens on a mantle.  A

Morning Ambassador so much work I would be exhausted from just mixing the ingredients.  I'll just use plastic and let someone else do it.

Patricia, this is a great project for kids!   We used to make ballerinas and Christmas decorations for hours using lots of creativity.    Miss those days!

Patricia, sounds like a fun project with the kids, and the big kid (my husband).  Funny, when I read the headline I thought of my dogs and how I would hand them on our tree.  lol

Here is a card that my husband drew of our dogs.  We sent it out as a holiday card a few years ago.

Christina,

Now that's a beautiful picture of your dogs! Your husband is a great artist. I'm sure your dogs bring you lots of joy. There's something about unconditional love that takes your breath away.

You're a lucky lady!

Joan,

I'll bet making ballerinas was a lot of fun and it's great for eye hand cooridination too! Being a ballerina was my first ambition in life.

You sound like you have many wonderful childhood memories.

Hi Patricia,

Great recipe and I may make some and paint them for our tree. I have been doing crafts since I was little and I was a brownie leader for many years too so crafts and earning badges were what we did mostly. Thanks for some good memories and I still have some ornaments I made when I was about 15 yrs old. They have turned yellowish on the edges and a few have tiny chips but they are still so special. Surprisingly I  found them in my mother's boxes of Christmas ornaments. I did not know she still had kept them.

Hi Krisin,

I hope you have a joyful Christmas season with more memories to last for a lifetime. We definitely learned a lot as scout leaders, didn't we, especially from our girls. I'm glad you still have a few ornaments that you made when you were 15 years old. I don't have any childhood memories like that but not long ago I found my long ponytail that I snipped when I was growing up. I sure wish I still had that same hair color!

I'm glad you found your Christmas ornaments in your mother's boxes of Christmas ornaments. I also have my children's homemade ones too. For me, they are priceless!

Let me know how the ornaments turn out. Thanks Kristin for being a friend.
