High Rise Condos for Sale in Coastal San Diego California

Downtown San Diego condosI occasionally get a call from buyers who are looking for condos but in particular want to be in a high rise condo building.

Not surprisingly this request is usually from buyers who are living in cities where high rise condos are common, NYC and Las Vegas for example.

High rise condos are not common here until you get to downtown San Diego where high rise condo buildings are abundant, especially if you want to be along the coast to enjoy the views.

At the far northern end of the county you will find a couple of high rise condo buildings in Oceanside. One, Marina Towers, is truly a high rise with 17 floors, but the other more-recently built building, Oceanside Terraces downtown, may more properly be considered midrise at 6 stories.

Condos in these buildings facing the ocean or marina/harbor offer fabulous views and will normally be priced in the 6 to 7 figures…a bargain compared to downtown and Los Angeles.

Bayside condos for sale in downtown San DiegoThere are no high rise condo buildings along the coast until you get to La Jolla, about 20 miles to the south from Carlsbad.

High rise condos in La Jolla Village and nearby offer amazing ocean views and easy access to all that La Jolla Village has to offer and are, as one would expect, pricier, although not by Manhattan standards.

Units in the best known full-service building will typically range from $1.6M to around $5 million.

Downtown San Diego offers plentiful high rise condo options, with many building built during boom times. T

here are both new condos for sale (e.g., Bayside condos, Sapphire) as well as resales with prices in the 6 and 7 figures. Expect to pay a premium for high rise full service condos with the best views and on the upper or penthouse levels.

Same here.

When I get the rare request for a high rise Co-Op, I know they are from NYC.

Co-ops here are rare.  Very rare.

A person of many dreams, I've often thought living in a high rise condo would be so cool. I think living in a high rise in San Diego would be right up top at the best, it's such a beautiful town and I'd love to see the views! We've just recently (for the most part) built high rise condos downtown Seattle (of course, during the boom). I've had the opportunity to visit open houses and marvel at the views. Nicely done post, thanks.

Hi Jeff, Congrats on the feature. A nice report. Before I went into real estate, I didn't love the high rise so much. I used to think of them as Human Filing Cabinets, LOL.

Congrats on the feature. I have not sold too many high rise condos in San Diego County--perhaps because there is more of that in the downtown area.

In our area it is probably the only chnace to live on the beach. While you can buy oceanfront condos, 2/2 starting just a bit over $150K, you can touch a house for anything under $600K and this would be something really great.

Jeff, we don't see many high rise condos here. I can see where the view would be terrific.

I've seen some of those buildings, especially the newer ones in downtown San Diego and they look like they have incredible views.  Given what buyers get, I think those prices are reasonable.

Jeff - Great information about high rise condos in your area! We don't have any "high rise" condos in Wellington, in fact we don't have many condos in general, but if you head east you'll be able to find high rises.

Lenn - co-ops are even more rare here than high rise condos.

Rene - it certainly would be a different lifestyle. The views from some of the homes I have toured and shown are truly amazing. And it would only be worth  it if you had great views - not all high rise units offer views worth paying for in my opinion.

Melissa - same here. And showing property downtown is very different, and in many ways much more complicated. Parking can be a real challenge.

William - well it is not my first choice, except as a second home perhaps or a rental property. But the lifestyle has become very popular and downtown has really gone through some changes since I moved here. And pricing is better! But those HOA fees. Yikes.
