The Stony Point area, located at the northern-most tip of triangular Rockland County, NY is the center of a significant region in American Revolutionary War history. During the war, the Kings Ferry in Stony Point linked New York and the southern colonies with New England. General George Washington crossed the Hudson River via this route many times. In 1781, Washington's French allies used it on their way to the decisive Battle of Yorktown.
General "Mad" Anthony Wayne achieved his nickname in the Battle of Stony Point, which took place just a north of Stony Point. Wayne led 1,350 troops against a British garrison and captured this strategic point for the Continental Army. The battlefield is preserved as a historic place, with a museum and interpretive center on the site.
Inside the house is a piece of history: a mantle which once was in a home called the "Arnold-Andre Treason House," where traitor Benedict Arnold and his British confederate Major Andre once met. It came from the home's second floor southeast bedroom where Arnold and Andre reputedly watched a cannonade drive away the British ship HMS "Vulture," cutting off Andre's escape. From that same room, the "Andre Window," through which the two men watched the action, is now in the collection of the Rockland County Historical Society.
