$8 Window Treatments. No Kidding.

This is Part II of "Window Treatments to the Rescue."

Now, I know this is not on par with the window treatments that Scarlet O'Hara ripped off the wall and transformed into a frock to impress Rhett Butler but...

They do the trick when it comes to blocking out a parking lot without blocking the light. They're 36 inch wide fabric Readyshades installed horizontally as opposed to vertically. I trimmed them down to fit the height I needed, pulled off the sticker, stuck them to one side of the window jam and then used 3m Command Adhesive Strips to attach them to the other side of the window jam. In this application I used two sets. Be sure and get the fabric shades because the paper shades are too wimpy.

Susan,

They're very pretty...I wonder if they sell them around here. I think they'd be ideal in a bedroom that I'm having problems with finding the right shades for.

Wow!  In the picture those look great! I love the effect of using them horizontally and I never would have though of that on my own! We bought the shades that open both up and down for our bathroom garden tub window. They are really nice but also quite a bit more expensive than regular shades but we didn't know what else to do since we wanted the top of the window open and the bottom blocked. I will keep this window treatment in mind for the future and suggest it to others.

Susan, do you mind me asking you where you bought those?  Also, are they pretty easy to install as it sounds or did a take a little finessing?

01/25/2008 07:41 PM by Libby Cousins- Contract Mortgage Processor (Extraordinary Processing)

I have seen them at Lowe's. I think Walmart carries them as well.

01/25/2008 07:56 PM by Charity Lane (Remax 100)

Home Depot carries them too - good thing to have in our staging kit - just in case!

Susan ~ They look really good and solved the problem of the parking area.  Good idea!

01/25/2008 08:43 PM by Kathy Passarette, L.I. Staging/Decorating (Creative Home Expressions)

Very creative... using the blinds horizontally vs. vertically, and also the way you attached them too.  They look nice, still let in the light but block the unpleasant view of the parking lot.

Thanks for this brilliant tip Susan -- I've used these before, but never thought to use them turned sideways -- thank you!

I love the idea of turning those around.  Great idea I'm sure many of us can use.

01/26/2008 12:57 AM by ARDELL DellaLoggia (Sound Realty)

Jo-Anne: Well it looks like you can find them at Lowe, Home Depot, K-Mart and in the Pacific Northwest you can find them at Fred Meyers.

Libby: It took me less than 5 minutes a window.

Do you find that you need to use sewing skills often in your field?

01/26/2008 01:49 AM by Sarah Nopp, REALTOR(R), CRS. RE/MAX Four Seasons, Olympia WA (RE/MAX Four Seasons)

Susan - Thanks for sharing such a terrific idea. I would never have thought to use the shades in this way.

Now that is really thinking out of the box... very clever!  Looks great too!

Susan, what a fabulous idea!  I've never seen that done, and it's quite brilliant!

01/26/2008 08:16 AM by Patricia Kennedy (Evers & Company)

This is a very clever idea Susan.  It seems very simple too.  The view is much better now and you didn't have to completely cover the windows. Very cool.

Kathy: We certainly don't need to focus on the parking lot.

Terrylynn: You know what they say "Necessity is the mother of invention.

Lisa: You can cut them to fit just about any window too.

What a bargain!  It is so nice to just see the trees outside the window instead of the curb.  Great choice!

I think it looks great.  I like your frugal style especially when it works.

01/26/2008 07:11 PM by Latonia Parks (Keller Williams Realty)

That is a great idea and so cost effective.  I have to admit I do not think I would of thought of that one!

Maureen: This is the little complex that I was talking about when I asked you for a staging estimate. Thanks for your feedback.

Ardell: Sometimes 1 little turn makes all the difference.

Sara: I know how to sew but since it's one of my least favorite past times I usually staple, nail, hot glue or anything else I can think of. I think I came up with this idea just to get out of sewing.

01/26/2008 09:11 PM by Susan Peters - Seattle Realtor/Staging Specialist (Re/Max Mutual Realty)

Lynn: I keep stumbling on these ideas because I'll try anything once.

Judy: Thanks and BTW you have a great website.

Patricia: And best of all it's quite cheap!

01/27/2008 02:31 AM by Susan Peters - Seattle Realtor/Staging Specialist (Re/Max Mutual Realty)

Lynn, Judy and Patricia: Thanks so much for taking a look. This technique works really well in city too with the houses being so close together.

Susan staged me welcome mat

What a great idea, Susan! I will keep it in mind for those problem views.

Cheers,

Karen: That's important in Seattle where weneed all of the light we can get.

Karen D. and Kathy: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Kristina: Maybe we can get Readyshade to put a sticky strip on each end.

01/27/2008 07:13 PM by Susan Peters - Seattle Realtor/Staging Specialist (Re/Max Mutual Realty)

WOW pretty clever, and it looks wonderful..I have not seen the fabric ready shades anywhere as yet, where did you get them?

Phyllis Pafumi

01/27/2008 08:57 PM by Phyllis Pafumi-ReStyled to Sell Staging Homes NJ (ReStyled to Sell Home Staging New Jersey)

Kristina: That's why I recommend bottom top shades to my clients when they are moving into a new home. This is just a faster cheaper version.

Latonia: When it comes to decorating Frugal is my middle name.

01/28/2008 02:22 AM by Susan Peters - Seattle Realtor/Staging Specialist (Re/Max Mutual Realty)

Carol: I'm glad so many have found it helpful.

Robin: I love that welcome mat! Maybe I should have some made up.

01/28/2008 05:24 PM by Susan Peters - Seattle Realtor/Staging Specialist (Re/Max Mutual Realty)

Phyllis:  I got these at Fred Meyer. It's a local variety store but several people have commented that they can be found at K-mart, Lowes and Home Depot.

01/28/2008 11:53 PM by Susan Peters - Seattle Realtor/Staging Specialist (Re/Max Mutual Realty)

Great Idea Susan!  I've used these shades in my own home when I first moved in.  Never thought of using them sideways.

Thanks,
