How to properly dispose of FOG..fats, oils and grease

Hi John, I came back to make sure this was suggested. I thought I did it the first time but the Suggest button was available and I hit it again. A very useful post for anyone. 

John great advice about what to do with fats, oil and grease...never put them down the drain....cool it, can it and chuck it.

My daddy told me about this many many years ago but I read an article about plumbing problems during the holiday and it was mainly grease and jamming too much into a disposal.

Great suggestions...thanks. Many of us already know this, but then get sloppy and ignore what we know.

I have this included in my lease agreements with my tenants.  I see people do it at their own houses and I tell them this and they just don't care- another reason to have a lateral sewer line inspection as buyers!

A great reminder that's not only considerate of local water utilities but potentially cost effective. Once a FOG clog sets in, it takes a professional to clear the line

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this post Q-man. The things we dump down our drains are killing us - the fish, the wildlife, our precious watersheds. FOG is a real problem and education is critical.  FOG is like fat on our arteries - clogs things up to dangerous levels.

I was just telling my client that yesterday.  He's a bright guy and had never heard that.  That's why I think an important part of my job is education.

It's funny how many people will pour FOG down the drain, even though they always saw their mom dispose of it properly when they were a kid. It's kind of like the commercials that tell you don't have to rinse off dishes and pans before you put them in the dishwasher because the heavy duty cleaning capabilities of their machine will clean it all off. Sure it will, until all that food clogs the drain line. I guess it's just the easy way to do it... that is until the plumber has to come out and fix it.

John, this is enormously important information for everyone.  Most people do not stop to think about what happens to everything that travels through their waste pipes. Add a few potato peels to that FOG and you are in real trouble!

My wife saves jars to dump oil and grease in and then we toss the jars when they are full.

I lost my appetite.  Most people I know put grease down the drain.  I collect it in a can and dump it in the trash.  I don't even feel good about that.  I read there are services that will pick up oil and grease, but I don't know how to find them.
